Default How does the GPS work on an 8310

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

I am purchasing an 8310 through Rogers and currently have the $15/month umlimited e-mail plan. I only use e-mail and bb messenger so this is great. I have no use for browsing the internet and thus have no use for a full data plan. I was told that I need a full data plan to use the gps on the 8310. Why is this? I mean, I would be paying the $10/month for Telenav so why do I need a full data plan and how does it work with the gps? ie: do you use a mb of data every 10 minutes while using the gps or how does this work?

Thank you.

Because all the data for the maps comes off the cell network. No data, no maps. The GPS will work but it won't do any good without a map to plot your location on.

Gotcha. How fast does it eat up your memory on the data plan?

Depends on the app. Google is pretty data intensive as it uses bitmap type images. BBMaps uses vector maps so it uses less data. TeleNav uses quite a bit.

I think it is google maps will show the amount downloading, honestly, for any of them, expect large data usage... upwards of 1-2 mb per trip.

Ouch! Thanks for the information though. So, basically for someone who doesn't wanna pay for a data plan in the first place this is not a good idea for me. Rogers is sending me an 8310 but the gps will basically be useless then. ARGH :(

you can get their 5 dollar 10mb rogers vision plan, it will allow you to use the mapping applications, you just need to enter the tcp settings.

10mb isnt much but its not bad for occasional GPS usage
