Default BES and Domino - How It Works

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,
After doing some searching on the internet, I am still unsure how Domino and BES work. If you can point me to some documentation, that would be great.

Just a few questions which some of you can assist me with -

Do the BBadmins group receive and send the email on behalf of the user? (Much like the besadmin for exchange).
What replication needs to be setup between servers? (What folders to replicate etc)
How often should the servers replicate these files.
Is there a need to replicate the mail files?

Thanks in advance,
BBfan111

Check out the BES 4.1 SP4 documentation at Livelink - Redirection

Specifically the Feature and Technical Overview will give you a good overview ... check out the BlackBerry Enterprise Server workflows.

I'd answer more questions but I'm not so well versed in Dominos; I'd rather Exchange it.

to your questions:

- no bbadmin group will not send mails.
- basic domino replication will do (names /admin4..) / for mail put them in the same NNN
- no mails file replication

In addition to the above, you should also run the Domino maintenance tools (Best Practices rule) on the following:-
Users mailfile - Lotus\Domino\Data\Mail\*.nsf
BES directory - Lotus\Domino\Data\BES\*.nsf (both the profiles & state dbs)
The maintenance tools are fixup, updall & compact. You can setup a program document in server config document to do this on a schedule.

I use a Domino BES. My Domino BES server is dedicated, i.e. it does not do anything other than BES and is not a user server. I don't replicate any user databases onto my Domino BES server. Obviously your BES server will need to share the domain Domino Directory, but this is probably already set-up unless for some reason you put the BES server into it's own domain. Also as mentioned, unless the BES server is in the same notes named network as other mail servers, you will need connection documents to allow mail routing and replication of names.nsf, admin4.nsf etc.

I replicate the users local Personal Address Books and Journals onto the the users mail server (where their mail files reside) and set ACLs to allow the Domino BES server to access them all. Then just reference the PAB/Journal on the users' BES account.

The Domino BES server uses agents and the BlackBerry state DB (held on the BES server) to keep messages/PAB/journal entries in synch.

Replication only needs to be configured between local notes clients (for desktops just PAB and journal, for laptops mailfile, PAB and journal) and their home mail server.

Domino BES needs access to home mail server of users and their DB ACLs.

Fixup/updall/compact etc. should really be running on a schedule on all of your domino domain servers anyway, so no particular config needed for BES users.
