I can't seem to find the wallpapers COD. Its not in my removed modules folder, so I didn't move them, and they're not in my Java folder. This is with 4.5.0.55 for the 8310. Also, what are these:

- net.rim_bb_qm_aim_...
- net.rim_bb_qm_google...
- net.rim_bb_qm_icq...
- net.rim_bb_qm_msn...
- net.rim.bb_qm_peer... (??)
- net.rim.bb_qm_yahoo...

Wallpapers were not included in the 4.5.0.55 release. There's another thread with the files (somewhere here... I believe in the beta forum) if you want them.

The above group of COD's were... I believe... all the IM COD's, which I was asking if they're ok to delete (since I use Jivetalk). I don't know what the "peer" COD's above are for, but I assumed that they're also IM related. I don't recall seeing a reply to that question.

Hmm those could be new modules that's removable. Did anyone try to remove those?

Yes, those are the IM applications. There's no need to remove them. You can simply not check the boxes for them in Application Loader and they won't be loaded. Personally, I use JiveTalk and don't load any of these.

If I am upgrading my AT&T 8310 using say the 4.5.0.52 from Tim Italy, and I want the themes to remain the same as I have now (AT&T preinstalled only). Do I simply skip step 4 and move on to Step 5 to remove the PTT .cod files. Also, in step 5 do I still need to delete any of the other carriers theme .cods if I skipped step 4.

If you only want your carrier's preloaded themes then don't do anything to the Blackberry.alx file. Simple as that. You won't need to remove any theme .cod's from the java folder either.

To remove PTT, just remove the two PTT .cod's.

One thing to note, though. The AT&T theme is huge. If you don't use it, I would delete it.

I don't use the AT&T theme for sure, it's not very useful. So then all I need to do is remove it's .cod file in step 5. But to be sure, the removal of that theme won't affect any other applications like removing the one you mentioned in the first post.

Oh... and thank you for all the useful information you dole out daily.

Default Vibrate

Last week, I went ahead and installed 4.5.0.52 on my Curve and I have encountered a serious (at least to me) problem with my phone. I did your optimization guide before installing the OS and was able to have at least 22 MB free memory. However, my phone lost the ability to vibrate even though I have the vibrate profile on active. The vibrate ability is the most important feature of the phone that I need, since I am deaf - any ringtones, audio alerts, etc are pointless for me.

I am baffled on what might be the cause of the phone not being able to vibrate. I do NOT think it's hardware-related since it was working on 4.5.0.44 before I upgraded to .52. I never did your optimization guide on the .44 so I have a feeling one or several Java loader files that I "removed" from the main folder is the culprit for me losing that vibrate capability.

If you wish, I could make a screenshot list of all the files that I moved from the Java loader to the "Removed Modules" folder. With that, hopefully you could track the source of the problem.

I don't know of anything that would cause your device to not vibrate. A screenshot of all the files you removed would be helpful and we can see if anything sticks out.

There you go, John. Took me a while to pull it out of my wife's laptop and then tried to upload it here the first time but it crashed my computer for some reasons.

Oh well, the 2nd time is a charm.

Put the preinstalled ringtones back.

medialoader_sonic_networks.cod

I don't recommend removing that as it screws up your profiles. Could be the cause of the vibrate issue.

Thank You, John!
I followed this guide the first week I got my Pearl and I just followed it again after the OS Upgrade. Fantastic & very thorough!

For those of you that are skeptical because you're not very technically-savvy or don't think you have the time, the guide appears "wordy" but he's made it so simple and step-by-step that you'll find the immediate worth once you've rebooted your device.
Brave up and free your BB...

Thanks for a great set of instructions, John.

Used this guide today to free up some memory on my pearl and also upgraded to latest OS in the process. Worked like a charm!!

Now I can install more 3rd party applications. Getting ready to compete with iPhone-3G which should be here any time now...

Hi, thanks for the guide (even though I haven't been able to try it yet).

The guide looks very daunting even after browsing through it. I am currently on an Alltel BB Pearl 8130 and I think its version is 4.3.0.81 (platform 3.1.0.40).

Normally it sounds like most people have at least 4-5 mbs free when they first got there phone but I think I have even less. I barely have 1 or 2mb, but even after reading the guide, I don't see what I could have installed on the phone that could take up over 40mbs.

I'm sorry you probably get posts like this all the time, but normally those are from people who didn't even look at the guide.

John,

You are truly amazing! I have used these instructions for 4th time in last few weeks due to the 4.5 OS upgrades. I had been using the copy I printed out the first time and decided to just double-check before this last time to see if there were any changes or updates.

All I can say is wow! I was able to follow the instructions before but now that you have added the screen shots, these instructions have moved from great to absolutely awesome.

Thank you for your hard work to make life easier for the rest of us.

John, any chance we could get a look at what you have deleted in the latest OS out (.55)? Thanks, Travis

I have made notes in the post about 4.5 differences. The main thing in .52 and .55 is that the wallpapers have been removed by RIM. They decided to do some "optimizing" of their own. However, when wallpapers are removed, so are the colored folder icons. Word is that they have addressed this in later firmwares with a small folder icon .cod that contains just the folder icons.

John, I am on BB's site and trying to download the proper files for step one. I already had BB desktop manager/software (4.5 I think) and I am getting the BB Pearl 8130 OS stuff (or so I thought) which had the same version number and application number that I already have.

That OS software just turned out to be the desktop manager software again. I just don't see where or how I am supposed to find this OS software. I clicked the link straight from the guide and ended up with the desktop manager crap.
