Default How do I disable UMA?

Please Login to Remove!

I hate uma.

I want to use my wifi network and not data, but no matter what I do it connects to rogers through the mobile network.

While I was on vacation I had mobile network turned off and thought I could use wifi and not get charged, but I was wrong. As it was still using data through uma. I have chosen "wifi only" I tried deleting the service books, taking out the battery and putting it back in, I then connected to my wifi and it stayed connected for a bit a minute, but then the uma showed up and it connected to rogers

I've called blackberry, Ive called rogers, they dont know how to fix it. I am willing to pay anyone who can help solve this issue.

it makes it impossible for me to go to google.com, since I do not have access on my data plan and cannot ever use wifi since once it connects to uma the mobile network takes over.

the one thing that did fix this was updating to os 5, but that caused new problems on my phone so I was forced to downgrade back to os 5

please someone help me figure this out

UMA does not use data. If you got charged, you weren't connected to WiFi and UMA.

Not true. I got charged. I only had wifi on and it was connected to UMA. I was receiving calls and texts even thought mobile network was OFF.

Were you charged extra or just your standard tariff?

Text messages are not data. That uses the voice network. But if you are using UMA then you have voive service even with mobile network off.

I'm not sure this is the answer, but I would find out if setting preferred network for calls to mobile network only, with mobile network off, is the answer. See what others say. Now that you've clarified it someone will be able to provide the certain answer.

I know their not data, but I was just saying that it was an indication that not only wifi was on, like I had wanted. Texts can not be received through wifi...

But wifi is the only thing on, if you have turned mobile network off. The point is that UMA allows you to connect to the mobile network, if you will, for voice services, which includes text messages. I would assume that text messages work when on UMA, as you say it is happening.

My theory is that setting preferred network for calls to network only will prevent using UMA, which is what you want.

You should not have been charged extra for texts or calls sent or received over UMA. Something else happened. Did you have the actual cellular radio turned off or just mobile data? If so, then the calls and texts could have still gone out over the mobile network.

The other possiblity is that Rogers could have a setting in their UMA/GAN system that knows you were connecting from outside of Canada based on your IP address and billed you at roaming rates. That would be a royal jerk move, but they didn't get Robbers as their nickname for nothing.
