Don't Part With Your 9700's Yet
Please Login to Remove!
So far, initial reports of the 9900's battery life are very disappointing. Given all the new features and gimmicks of the 9900, RIM has dropped the ball when it comes to the basics, especially the battery life. Why have all the dandy features when there is not enough power to run them by supper time?
The 9700 running on OS6 is far superior to the 9900, so don't part with your device yet. RIM has dropped the ball on their new flagship device. The 9700 may go down as the best BlackBerry ever.

Re: Don't Part With Your 9700's Yet
The 9700 with OS5 may be my favorite of all time one day, but the 9900 is terrific. I'll buy another battery to carry as a spare if I have to, or two more. Wife has the 9700 now anyway, and she isn't going to give it back.
(I haven't yet had to go a long day without topping off, so I've yet to see how battery life will be in my case. Fingers crossed.)

Re: Don't Part With Your 9700's Yet
Shorter battery life isn't all that unexpected, however. Faster processor, better graphics, etc. all consume more power.
There is a FAQ article on how to conserve battery power. Check it out, it may help.
And until battery technology can catch up to consumer demands, manufacturers and mobile user needs, you aren't going to see it get much better. Consumers want more capability, thinner, lighter, faster, sharper devices. Battery technology just isn't there yet to keep up.
Don't blame the device manufacture, blame the laws of physics and consumer demands that drive the market. There has to be a trade off somewhere.

Re: Don't Part With Your 9700's Yet
Well why is the 9900's battery inherenty weaker than the 9700's? I read somewhere that the 9900's battery is about 1100 mAh and the 9700's is about 1500 mAh--correct me if I am wrong. Why not put in the latter's battery into the former's device?

Re: Don't Part With Your 9700's Yet
I thought it was 1230 or 1250, but 12-something. So, lower battery capacity plus the points Dubdub mentioned.
I blame the lowest common denominator smartphone buyer. RIM is trying to give the market what is selling, and apparently battery life isn't it, judging by what is popular.

No one here knows, but RIM does. Maybe to make it thinner?

Ira makes a great point. Consumers want it all. Battery technology hasn't kept pace with consumer demands. You cannot have it all. There has to be a trade off somewhere, and it appears for now, battery life is that trade off.

Re: Don't Part With Your 9700's Yet
Well, at least we can switch out the battery. All the complaints I'm reading have me looking at https://store.shopblackberry.com/Pro.../ACC-38580-301 but I'm going to wait and see how it does for me.

My 9930 out performs my 9650 by 6 hours so I'm more than happy with my 9930 battery life.

Re: Don't Part With Your 9700's Yet
I will take shorter battery life over a device I like and use a LOT more than my previous device.

Then how does the iPhone keep all those features and yet maintain superb battery life? iPhone's battery life kicks the pants off the 9900.

I had an iPhone 3GS and its battery life was much less than my BB. Could not get much more than 6 to 7 hours. My daughter has the iPhone 4. Same thing. My BB could (and still does) go at least 12.
So I don't buy the line that says the iPhone was better.

Smooth, how do you replace the iPhone battery (and obviously you don't recall when the iPhone came out, the only want to get 8 hours out of it was to turn off Wifi, Bluetooth and disable push e-mail). Oh.

Re: Don't Part With Your 9700's Yet
All I can say is that for all the devices I've owned, the best in terms of battery life are my Bold 9700 and the iPhone 4. The worst is the Bold 9000. For now I assume that the 9900 is a little better than the 9000.
If anyone here is suggesting that the 9900's battery life is superior to that of the 9700, let him be accursed.

I would have parted just for the compass, and just because the compass is so, so cool.

I am still using a 9000 and battery life is no problem at all. I get 1.5 - 2 days between charges.

i have a 9700 running on OS6 and bridged to my playbook.....the speed is becoming intolerably slow for me....if i had a 9900 thats blazing fast and all i need is to keep it juiced up with regular charging, i wont take a 9700 over that....
