Default 8800 as a modem - Issues

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I have a 8800 and i am trying to use it as a modem to get onto internet on my laptop.Below are the issues faced:

1) I am getting Error 628 on trying to connect via Windows XP.I have followed the instructions given in cingular website.

2) I am able to get connected without any issues on Windows Vista. However, I am unable to get into VPN via Nortel client.

Any help to resolve the issues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Rama

An error 628 is a port disconnect.

VPN doesn't always work. My CISCO VPN client will not connect through the Blackberry.

Do you have the tethering BB data plan?

VPN is hit-or-miss when tethering.

Can you post a link to the cingular instructions? Thier reps suck and were no help at all. I was told when I bought it if you did not get the tether plan, you just used you minutes which is perfect for me. When I called they said they could not help me unless I had the teather plan.

The store rep told you that you would be able to do it but would use your voice minutes???

Sorry to tell you, but that is not true at all...tethering plan provisions additional network access on your account that will allow you to tether, if you don't have a tethering plan, you will have a tough time getting it to work and will get no carrier support...

Default Cingular Setup

Dial #: *99***1#

Username: [email address]

-OR-

Username: [email address]

Password: CINGULAR1

Modem string: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","isp.cingular"

The modem string is extremely important. You set it by going into control panel, modems, select the 33600 standard modem, then set the string in advanced.

Also, you can just use the Cingular Communications Manager and avoid the hassle. Cingular says the 8800 is not supported in CCM, but it is.

Sorry for the crummy link. It won't let me post URLs since I'm a new user.

Also... installing the Blackberry Desktop Manager 4.2.x.x will automatically install the modem driver...

I'm not sure about other versions.

The cingluar rep told me it would just burn DATA minutes, not voice. I already have the data plan.

I tried the communications manager from Cingular, but it would not connect to my BB. I am running Vista though and it said it was not compatable. I had to run it in compatability mode for XP to even get it to load. I tried the blackberry, bluetooth, and usb options, but it never found it.

I do have desktop manager 4.2.x.x, but I see nothing about using as a modem.

I have never been able to get this to work. I never got my 7290 to either. I now have a new laptop and a new BB and I still can't. I think my brain is becoming the likely problem.......... =(

I installed the desktop manager v4.2 and the modem driver didn't install at all. How does one manually install the driver? the modemdriver folder in common files spits up a message stating it won't work with my hardware

Default Connected but not

I can connect to the Internet with various settings, e.g., WAP.CINGULARGPRS or ISPA, either with or without a password. I get a dialing, a verification, and then an IP address and a subnet, with these being "provided by the service provider". However, I can not get any Web based program to recognize the connection. I have tried IE7, Firefox, my e-mail client, and I have set them to use the dial up modem, but they do not find that I am on line.

These settings worked with my 8700c, but are not working with my new 8800. I do NOT have a tethering account, btw.

Any suggestions?

I am able to use my 8800c as a modem on Windows Vista, I installed Desktop Manager 4.1.2 and the latest version of Cingular Communications Manager and I can connect without any issues. With my 8700 I used to use the manual settings, creating a dialer, and adding an init string. But Cingular Communications Manager works fine for me

Chubby_nubby

Thanks for the suggestion of using CCM. I tried, but no joy. It would not connect for me, a step backwards.

I am connecting to the Net, but my programs are not seeing the connection. An IP address is being assigned, but no access to the Net.

If anyone else has a though, I'd appreciate it

Default Found Answer

Be certain in Advanced TCP/IP settings that "Use Default Gateway" is checked. It was unchecked at first in mine, and even though I could connect to the Internet, I could not use the connection.

After checking the box, I have full functionality.

I got the following error:
Supplementary service error:
unexpected data value.

Do I add all what is below in the string command?
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","isp.cingular"
