Just found this and am very happy! Verizon's "Mobile IM" program was awful. It's good to have legitimate AIM.
And skllndy365, for Verizon IM is included with texting bundles, so I assume each IM is considered a SMS.

Well I have Texting completely blocked on my phone so I don't see howd if be able to use the aim were talking about. So I'm thinking for at least Verizon that it is covered under data usage.

CONFIRMED
as far as Verizon goes, it is covered under Data.
I have all forms of texting blocked and haven't been charged a single cent for AIM on my BlackBerry.

I have an AIM account that I use very rarely to talk to my kids. Most often, we prefer email for the mere fact that you can answer it whenever you have time or feel like it. I have a generous texting plan on AT&T and the wife and I use the heck out of that. So, I was wondering, if it's all the same, why using AIM or another IM client would be any easier than texting in general? I assume you still have to "Sign-On" and then hope the recipient is available. Where-as with a generic text message, it's more like personal email that will wait for them to have a moment to answer.
Looks easy enough to install but I can't decide if it would only be for the novelty of it.

Davemack,
The short answer to your question is that its not... Based on what you have said, the only reason to DL is to have it. It sounds like you have things set up well for your lifestyle, so I wouldn't change anything.
One reason someone may use that is for the simple fact that they may be able to save some $$ by eliminating text msging or lower their minute package by using more data. But if those aren't issues, then I wouldn't worry. One thing people tend to forget is that not every available program, even free ones, need to be downloaded. Its all need based.

I'm trying to download AIM from www.blackberry.com/aim (Orange UK, BlackBerry Bold 9000) and am getting "Sorry, your device does not meet the system requirements that are needed to support AOL instant messenger for BlackBerry." - I have otherwise managed to get ICQ, GoogleTalk, Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger to install and function without trouble.

Thanks mshipek. Worked perfectly. I am running this using an unlocked storm 9530 with .76 on T-Mobile. I have to do some thing similar to get the web browser to work. After installing these service books, AIM works but the Browser disappeared.
Has anyone figure out a fix or modified the service books so that both AIM and the Blackberry Browser can operate at the same time?
Thanks,
Scott

does anybody have a solution or redirect me to another thread for my problem.
so far, for as i can tell, AIM still isnt working for the 8120(all t-mobiles). me and a few others still get the message when we try to sign on that. Connection error(65) problem receiving data from the server. does this mean that i need the data plan? because before late april, i signed onto AIM without a problem, and ever since april 24th, 2009, none of us has been able to sign onto AIM. help please? very much appreciated.
