Default Connecting to SQL Server

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,
Before we go out and buy 20 BBs (7230), I nned to be sure that we can have a custom app that can interact with a SQL 2000 data base. Are there any sample code out there? developer sites?

Thanks.
George.

If anything, you can always use the BB Browser to read data off the SQL server via an http connection. You can also code an ASP.NET site using the MOBILE INTERNET TOOLKIT to also interact with the data. On both counts you can do the standard issued add, update, delete and etc. functions.

Our application talks to SQL server via ASP. We use different asp pages and pass them parameters in the URL. for example, http://www.blah.com/getRecords.asp?u...&table=myTable

then, inside the .asp page (which is executed on the server side) it would use the username and password provided in the parameters to login to the sql server and get the records from the specific table. just parse the response. we currently use a delimiter for the fields, although i think we're gonna start using the xml parser soon.

hope this helps!

AFAIK you should be able to use JDBC. It's going to be a lot of work and your jar file may be bloated, but it should work.

The best approach is to create a J2ME app that runs on the device. This app would store data locally. A server-side process would push data to your device-side app and perform the updates to your SQL database.

A second approach is to create a thin-client app using ASP.NET, JSP, PHP, etc. The downside of this approach is that your users won't have access to their data if they are out of coverage. In addition, many users find the "slowness" or latency of a thin-client app too much.

I would think it would be easiest to create an webapp to return the data in XML and have the blackberry read and parse the xml data via http.

Your XML structure could easily be extended for other system that may need or require it in the future.

No?

arconsulting,
Did you say you can create an app via .net? Is this a "web site" that runs on the server and is accessed via the BB? or is it a .net app that runs on the BB and access data on the server?

The first. You create a .NET app that runs on the server and is accessed via the BlackBerry browser.

For device-side, you can only use J2ME.
