Default ATT 8300 only receives 'edge' after power on? Requires radio reset

Let me know if this belongs in the General or one of the handheld forums, etc.

We had a user go through two 8310c devices and two Blue AT&T SIM cards within a week since the device would intermittently loose full 'EDGE' and drop down to 'edge' or even GSM (voice only). The first device was really bad, 9/10 using the MEdia Net browser would cause the symptoms. It would lock onto full 'edge' when powered up from his home in the morning either. The 2nd 8310c didn't lose 'EDGE' when on MEdia Net or the TeleNav GPS, but it would still frequently not lock onto full 'EDGE' when booted in the morning, it would stay on 'edge'.

If I drop the user back down to his old Cingular 8700c and moved the number back to his old Orange Cingular SIM. This works fine. Moved him back to the newer of the two 8310c devices and SIM (since the problem was worse with the old combination, at least as we observed it in limited testing). It worked fine for 3 days, then only booted up to 'edge' in the morning the following two days.

The user powers the device off at night using the icon on the home screen.

I moved him to a different SIM and 8300c (without the GPS) last night. and he saw the same issue. TSupport said we need to grab the logs off of the current device within 2 hours of it happening.

Home, Manage Connections, deselect 'Mobile Network AT&T', wait a bit, re-enable 'Mobile Network AT&T'.

Or pull the battery.

I have another user who has the same issue on the same build of the 8300c, but to a lesser extent. He powers his device on in the morning, shuts it off then leaves for work. Powers it on at the end of the day, then shuts it off before bed. Sometimes he only gets 'edge' and not the full 'EDGE', but not to the extent the first user does. The second user reports the problem happens more often when he travels abroad (Europe, Asia, SA). He toggles the network in 'Manage Connections' twice, then he goes on his way. Both users homes are in affluent suburbs. They get 2-3 bars and dBm reads -71 to -84 in both places.

I can't get my 8300c to flake out like that on start up.

Any one else see anything like this?

Platform: 2.4.0.73
App Version: 4.2.2.166 (301)
The user in on our BES. No third party apps.

Guess you don't live in one of those affluent suburbs LOL....

I would suspect an AT&T tower issue in those areas. I've had that happen to me any number of times. It has nothing to do with signal strength and everything to do with GPRS/Edge service coming across the transmitters. AT&T Edge service can be really flakey in spots.

Your assumption is correct. I don't live near their housing developments. If anything I would expect them to have better service than I get (all things considered) but perhaps not.

The odd thing is that the 8700c (he's had his first one about a year and a have which developed microsphone issues, the a second one up until recently) never did this.

The questions is: Could it be a false alarm?

I've had mine flake like that but was still able to send/receive e-mail and browse. I've gotten new sims and they didn't help.

Default Hmm....

"affluent suburbs" = Actually not fans of cell towers. Don't necessarily assume they will have better coverage.

Due to the intermittent nature of the problem, have you done any static build-up mitigation? Be interested to see if any mitigation steps might help.

Just because you don't hear the zap of a discharge doesn't mean it isn't happening.
