I'm having the same problem:

it just has everything greyed out and won't detect my BB. I am using DTM 4.5 and OS 4.5.0.10. Any ideas?

Bit of an old topic. I ran into the same issue and here is what I did to fix it:

1) Downloaded the latest blackberry desktop manager (4.6)
2) I formated my media card by doing the following: **Use at your own risk**
a) went into "options" on the phone
b) selected "media card"
c) hit the menu buton, selected "remove media card"
d) hit the menu button and formatted
e) waited about 30 seconds and tried the sync again.

Hope that helps someone.

i have this problem too.
my media sync sees my device but keeps giving me an error saying:

"media sync failed to connect to your blackberry device."
there's a retry button but always get that error msg again.

when i first installed media sync, it worked and i had playlists and all synced to my bberry from itunes but now nothing.

ive tried formatting my media card but no resolve - now i just have no music on my card at all.

Sounds to be more of a connectivity issue than it actually working with mediasync.

Are you able to connect with the desktop manager software?

Default I use doubleTwist (http://www.doubletwist.com) to sync my Blackberry with iTunes

doubleTwist just launched a public beta that syncs all your media with your Blackberry and other devices. It's free and much easier than anything I've seen.

Does your computer recognize your device, ie can you move files directly from your PC to your device or media card? Is mass storage mode activated?

If not do a search for "Blackberry Mass Storage Activation" and run the tiny program. This solved my issue. I am running 4.7 though and was getting the same message.

.rar files are used by a program called WinRAR.. It's another type of compression similiar to .zip just a different algorithm.

See if you can find WinRAR, if not post a link to that pinstack article.

Before we over complicate this, Does you computer not see your phone with mass storage mode enable?

What Settings do you have in Options -> Media Card.

What OS on your computer, and what version of the Desktop Manager are you using?

Does your computer see other USB drives without a problem?

hey thanks for explaining the .rar file to me. the fix actually works. it took care of my mass storage problem as well as my itunes sync problem and from what i read it works on all blackberrys here are the links i used

WINrar download
WinRAR - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com

mass storage /media sync fix
Mass Storage issues? (Here's the fix) - PinStack.com

it was very easy. connect your device to your cpu then just open up the rar file and export to dexktop then run the program. a dos window will pop up and do its thing then your device will restart and your set.

thanks everyone for all the help!

One other thing to point out is, based on my current understanding, BB Media Sync does not support networked files, meaning if your music files are NOT on your local machine you will not be able to sync with BBMS.

This is a big pain in the a$$ for me because ALL of my music is on an external hard drive connected to my laptop via USB; I can't believe RIM wouldn't address this limitation. Anyone know a reason why?
