Default Can I remove the Camera from the Pearl (8100) and it still work?

Please Login to Remove!

The place where I work does not allow cameras on site (including on cell phones). I know about disabling the camera through BES and the IT policies but that is not enough for my work. I can not physically have the camera on the phone.

I would like to know has anyone taken the camera off the board (unsolder it off of the board) and does the Pearl still work the same (except for the no camera)?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

i can't answer your question but thought i'd chime in with my two cents regarding cell cameras:

i think all phones should have a no-camera option (at a discount of course... LOL).

i never use the camera on my phone. ever. if i want to take a pic of something i'll take a GOOD one with a REAL camera.

i use my blackberry for work... i don't need a camera on it.

anyway... hope you find a solution to your problem! it'd be nice for you to be able to have a cell at work - though these days you're hard pressed to find a phone without one.

If you search around there is a member that has done this. It was very early on in the 8100 thread. I don't even think they took it apart, they just pried it out (Yikes!).

Yeah, I saw that one. I was looking for any new information on it because trying to pry off the camera scares me. I know you can damage the board or other components by doing that. I might be fine prying it off, but I would rather have a clean approach that is less destructive and hopefully a little less risky. I was just trying to see if anyone had actually taken apart and were successful in removing the camera by unsoldering it. Thanks for the help.

I would just study the disassembly photos and you will probably get a good idea on your approach.

Get super glue and glue the camera's lens. :D

I think the cameras on all recent cell phones are modular (not soldered, but plugged in)...at least I know all of the hundreds I've taken apart have been.

I have taken MANY cameras out for employees of NASA, and have never had issues afterwards.

Thanks. That is exactly what I was asking about. I just assumed it was soldered to the board and not modular.

I assume that if I just follow the instructions to disassemble the Pearl that it is as simple as pulling the camera off (or is there any special things to worry about).

Thank so much for the help.

just folow the disassembly guide from blackberryfaq, until you get to this part.

when using the piler, be aware of the lens glass. it may crack, if your not careful.

the 4 pins its all that are holding the camera connected to the motherboard.

when done. just assembel the device, and you should be good to go.

Just as an alternative (I realize that this wouldn't cut it for a very high security place), but the camera can be disabled on the BES, and you can also simply delete the camera software - view the Modules and delete net_rim_bb_camera.cod (or the BlackBerry Camera program if there is one).
