BES + gmail hosted email + exchange

Well after a month of trying to do this whole blackberry/exchange thing on the cheap I'm breaking down and doing it the way it was intended. Before I do so I'd like to share my current setup and see if I'm just overlooking something.
1st setup:
I had BES installed on Server 2003 that is running exchange 2007. Exchange does not host my email because I didn't want to take up the server space. Emails are downloaded into an outlook through Pop3 and are stored in the exchange mailbox. I could never get BES to work correctly with exchange though so I moved on to setup 2.
2nd setup:
I used gmail to download my pop mail and then connected my blackberry to my gmail with imap. Outlook then connects to the same gmail account with imap. This works "OK" but not great. At least the mail syncs.
Where I'd like to go from here:
I'm looking at having gmail (google apps) host my mx record and have all of my clients download mail from there using pop3. Is it possible to connect gmail to exchange so I can use BES?
Also, Do I need 2 servers? 1 for BES and 1 for Exchange?
Any help will be appreciated!
