Default Unknown Calls on BB Bold

Please Login to Remove!

Before anyone shoots me, I've been searching for a solution for this annoyance for some time now, but haven't really come across anything yet..

I've got a BB Bold with Rogers, the phone works great! BUT every call I receive, regardless of whether its someone in my contacts or not, is branded as an 'Unknown call'.

I've done:
- Adjusted the Smart Dialing thing (national length is currently at sorry 10! for Canadian numbers)
- Content Protect is disabled
- For including contacts under the Content Protection I've had it at Yes and No and still no change when a contact person calls
- my contact numbers DO NOT have the + symbol in front of their number
- My own number isn't unknown, it shows up correctly in the call log..
So far none of these troubleshooting techniques work.

I'm hoping there's some sort of setting within the BB because I don't particularly want to feed the Rogers monster $7/mth for a Call Display feature - I don't really need to know the NAME of the person that called, I'll be happy if it shows the number itself instead of automatically listing it as 'Unknown' so I can determine myself who it is and call back...

Thanks :(

Hahaha.. ok, that was a blonde move on my behalf for the 9 digit thing.. to make it sound less bad on my part, it was originally 10, but still had the same issue, and for some reason I didn't count right and put in 9. D'oh!

Bad math skills, but alas, 10 did not work either back then.

Edit: I just tried again with 10 digit for national number just to be sure and still 'Unknown number'. :(

Try Trapcall

Trapcall.com

It's a free application that unblocks numbers. It's pretty ingenious actually...

Uhm.., shouldn't you call Rogers tech support? That sounds like a service issue.

THIS IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE!
This has gone over before, where it will show up as UNKNOWN CALLER even if the person is in your address book, I suggest upgrading your software.

I was hoping that it was just something to do with the phone - I kinda wanted to lay off on calling Rogers because I don't really think its their service, my sister has the exact same plan but she has a 8900 and all her calls show up with the number rather than 'unknown number'.. so right there I kind of figured it was something to do with the phone.

I'll attempt to upgrade the software later on today and let you guys know!

Sorry for posting a repeat problem, I must have been using the wrong search terms - this is the first I've read about upgrading the software

Thanks!

Ok so, I've upgraded from v4.6.0.162 to v4.6.0.221 and the issue is still present..

Is there a specific upgrade version I would have to do?

I can almost guarantee that it's an issue with your caller id not working on your account. Call them and get it fixed up. I'm sure you won't be on the phone any longer than 10 minutes. DO NOT tell them you upgraded any software on your phone; it's probably a standard practice to automatically blame any problem on that as soon as they hear it.

There isn't much left that you haven't tried already, so these may be grasping at straws.

Check your Profile settings for Phone for your current profile: Profiles (icon), Advanced, select the currently active profile, scroll down to Phone, and then click on Phone, scroll down and see what Do Not Disturb is set to. If set to Yes, I have heard that it may interfere with number display.

If that doesn't work, the last resort is to call Rogers Customer Care, ask for Call Display and Name Display to be EXCLUDED, and then ask for Caller ID to be added. Call Display and Name Display are now integrated at Rogers (used to be separate options), so removing one will remove the other. Caller ID is apparently NOT the same as the other two as far as the Rogers Network is concerned. However, you MAY have a tough time explaining this to the phone rep.

For other readers, this solution won't work outside of Rogers, because only Rogers has Name Display in North America, no other carrier does. I have heard stories/rumours that sometimes the name information is being transmitted where the phone expects to see a number, which causes the issue (I haven't read many confirming stories on this though).

I realize these are not likely solutions. The #1 solutions have already been tried (Content Protection and Smart Dialing), so good luck.

PS - the Country Code is set to +1, right?

I just called Rogers.

They would do nothing and the guy really seemed like he knew nothing about Blackberry even though he was Blackberry support.

The answer is for them to sell me caller display. That is their only answer.
I can't believe the greed of these companies. There was no effort made to fix the issue.

Sorry for abandoning the thread!

Klotar:
Yes, my country code is set to +1, and do not disturb was set to no.

In the end, I had to call up Rogers.

I explained the situation and telling the rep about having Caller/Name Display excluded but just having the Caller ID listed as noted in this thread. He told me that caller display/name display/caller id is basically all the same, and that in order for me to even see the number, I would have to add the $8 Caller ID feature. He activated the caller id on my phone as a test and then phoned my device, which then showed his number (whereas without it would've just shown the 'Unknown Number'). So, the phone works for displaying the number, its just the way that the info transmits from Rogers to my phone.

After talking to the rep a little more, I asked him why my prepaid phone was showing phone numbers when I was being called but ever since I switched to a contract it doesn't anymore. He told me that prepaid accounts get caller id included but its (obviously) more expensive per minute in comparison to a contract etcetc. He was a VERY helpful guy, but from what I gathered, what I wanted wasn't just a freebie fix.

So in the end, yes, Rogers is a money-sucking monster. Because up in Canada, Rogers doesn't really have any other GSM-providing competitors (that I currently know of), it makes the game a little easier for them. ;)

Sucks.

Well, I'm happy that you solved the problem, sorry that it costs $8 extra to solve it. I have never been without Name Display on Rogers (well, actually I had, but before Rogers had GSM phones at all -- when they were still Cantel AT&T), so I couldn't be certain that was it. It was worth it to try the other suggestions first (which you did) just in case.
