Anyone used any management platforms apart from BES?

Hoping this kind of question isn't frowned upon so here goes.
I'm currently evaluating BES Express. Impressions after a couple of weeks are that I like it. Perhaps that's because it doesn't appear to have bitten me yet and so far things have mostly "just worked", but it's my perception so far.
Where we're at as a business is simple. Right now we have a bunch of phones (mainly Nokia E series) that are totally unmanaged other than they activesync to Exchange 2003 (soon to be Exchange 2010.
Our contract is up for renewal so we're looking at the options.
We don't want to be control freaks, just be able to give people nice phones that we can centrally set sensible security and configuration policies on.
It seems if you want proper centralised management/control on a budget, the two main options are BES Express or ActiveSync or moving up in price full BES or Good Technology.
I'd be interested if anyone has spent a decent amount of time with these options how they've found them. As I said, right now my impressions of BES Express and the Blackberry handsets and "experience" is overwhelmingly positive, but we may need a "Plan B" depending on users feedback as it doesn't matter how nice it is to manage, if enough people tell me they don't like using the handsets...
Thanks in advance.
