Default Updating your OS

Please Login to Remove!

I'm getting a Blackberry Bold 9000 tomorrow and I'm excited to try it out. I've heard that you can use its Wi-Fi without a data plan which I plan on doing. Because I wont have a data plan I wont be able to update the Bolds OS. Is there another way I could do it without the data plan? I'm sure this sounds dumb but could I put a friends SIM card that has the same carrier as me and then update the OS and switch back SIM cards? Any and all information's helpful, thanks guys!

Get the blackberry data plan. It will make things so much easier. Otherwise, good luck!

Wirelessly posted (Lets Go Canes!)

All the posts above me are very helpful. If you are mainly going to use text and voice, then you have what you need and you can upgrade. Otherwise, you may be disappointed.

Your profile says you are on AT&T. That being the case the carrier will force you on a data plan once you activate a BB on their network.

I personally would not recommend updating the OS right out of the box, especially if you are new to BBs. Use the device for a while. Find out what it can and cannot do. See if it works for you as it is. You may find that it isn't broken and doesn't need to be fixed, by an OS update or any such operation.

If you insist on upgrading, find the yellow sticky at the top of the 9000 section. The latest OS for your device can be found there along with complete instructions. Follow them exactly and be patient. It can take an hour or longer to complete.

If you are on ATT, you will automatically get a BB data plan added to your account, whether you want/need it or not. That is their policy. If you delete the plan, they will simply see that you have a BB and add it back.
