Default How to Migrate BES from Exchange 2000 or 2003 to Exchange 2007

Please Login to Remove!

There's great documentation on how to install BES for Exchange 2007 ... but I'm thinking most people are migrating from 2003 to 2007. Here's a fantastic KB Article RIM has posted...

How to migrate the BlackBerry Enterprise Server from Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 or 2003 to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007
Doc ID : KB14502
Last Modified : 2007-11-07
Document Type : How To

Environment

* BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for Microsoft® Exchange
* Microsoft® Exchange Server 2000
* Microsoft® Exchange Server 2003
* Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007

Procedure

To migrate the BlackBerry Enterprise Server from Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 or 2003 to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, complete the following:

1. Stop all services for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
2. Move the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account (default name is BESAdmin).
3. After migrating the Microsoft Exchange Server, verify the Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 permissions for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
4. Set the required permissions for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server in Microsoft Exchange 2007. For instructions, see KB12483.
5. If Microsoft Exchange System Manager 2003 is installed on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, remove it.
6. Perform a search for the files: MAPI32.dll and cdo.dll.
7. Rename any cdo.dll and MAPI32.dll files from the system32 and program files\exchsrvr\bin folder to a .bak file extension.
8. Download and install the latest Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) and CDO clients. For more information, see KB12697.
9. Install a MAPI subsystem by downloading and installing the Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1. For instructions, see the Microsoft Support web site.
10. Restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or run the handheldcleanup utility. For instructions on running the handheldcleanup utility, see KB00140.
11. Resolve the MAPI profile for the BESAdmin mailbox on the Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 by going to Start > Programs > BlackBerry Enterprise Server > Edit the MAPI.

Important: Restarting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.

Question Timing?

Thanks for the great info.

We are in process of planning our migration from Exchange 2003 to 2007. I was hoping to transition in slowly by first adding Client Access/Hub Transport servers followed by a CCR mailbox cluster.

Since BES seems to be very sensitive to the MAPI/CDO versions, when is the best time for me to upgrade BES? Do I do it when I put up the first Exchange 2007 or wait till the mailbox cluster goes up?

Thanks much,
Tim

Default Co-existance

Does this allow the exchange 2003 and 2007 systems to co-exist? Or, do I have to have all the BB users migrated over to exchange 2007 Before doing this?

Default 2003/2007 Coexistance

I am in the process of moving all of our users over to Exchange 2007 from Exchange 2003 right now. You ARE able to coexist as long as you continue to use the Exchange 2003 MAPI and CDO files. I currently have myself and the other IT guys running on the 2007 server for testing while running BES 4.1.6 MR1. I have not had any problems whatsoever. I just upgraded from 4.1.5 so I can vouch that this works for that version of BES as well.

One issue I had was that in order for the new Blackberry agent to start working, I had to remove the user's BES account before moving them to Ex2k7, and then recreate the account after the move. Otherwise, the BES saw the new mail server, but was trying to use the agent for the Ex2k3 server to check the users account which fails. It also would not let me complete enterprise activation on the device until I had deleted/recreated the account.

This seems to have solved any problems I was having after moving users.

IMPORTANT: You will want to move all of your users over to Ex2K7 and recreate/provision their devices before upgrading to MAPI & CDO 1.2.1 for Ex2K7. Otherwise, there could be conflicts while trying to serve accounts still on the Ex2K3 server.

Apparently the upgrade to SP6 and reboot of the server has fixed the issue of having to delete the user's BES account before it would start working on the new Exchange server. The last few users that I have moved have automatically been switched to the new agent through the software. This should happen automatically as long as you don't have a static mailbox agent set for your users.

Are you experiencing any problems with the calendars syncronizing data with the blackberrys and exchange once moving them over to the 2007 server?

No, I have not had any issues with calendars not synching. So far, I haven't had any users mention they've noticed anything not working properly and it looks good from the server side as well.

Exclamation Transitioning

Hi,

I am working on a transition to 2007. I have the 2007 Mailbox Cluster up and running and have just migrated my first user with a BB. At this point the BB does not work.

I have not made any changes to the BB server yet.

In order to have interoperability between users on 03 and 07 should I just complete steps 1-5 and then wait to complete the remainder of the steps after all BB users have migrated to 07?

Thank you,
Tim

EDIT:
I decided to try what I could without impacting end-users.... I just completed step 4 to set the BESAdmin service account to ViewOnlyAdmin (all other perms in the KB were present). It took a few minutes and then email was flowing to the BB.

I am running 4.1.6 and the user account in the admin console updated correctly and I did not have to rebuild the BES account.

Question

Good morning!

I have Blackberry Professional Software 4.1.4.2 (or 4.1.4.15, depending on where I look) and need to migrate from Exc2k3 to Exc2k7. Since BPS is just a scaled down version of BES, will this procedures work for me too?

Thx

J.L.
