Question Go w/OS7 or wait for QNX?

Please Login to Remove!

After reading this article, I'm wondering if I should jump on OS7 or wait for QNX to be developed which I believe they slated for 2012. Apparently once the OS becomes QNX, there will be flash support and Android Emulation like the Playbook but who knows how long until they get there with that for the phones. I would hate to get a phone this summer to find out there won't be much support for it a few months later when I'm stuck in a new two year contract.

How long are you willing to wait?

I know. That's the main problem. I'd probably go with OS7 and by the time I'm eligible for an upgrade, QNX will have been out long enough to have most of the bugs ironed out; or at least one would assume.

Hasn't RIM (one of the CEOs, anyway) stated that the handsets will get QNX when dual-core CPU's come to the handsets? My impression is that is relatively far down the road.

My plan is to get the new Bold touch model when it comes to T-Mobile (this summer, probably late summer) and hand the 9700 down to my wife. (I'm not even going to think about the what-if scenarios with the acquisition by AT&T down the road, if it happens.)

Yup. Will probably go with the 9930 Touch (CDMA/Verizon) as I have had it with the 8330. It was great for its time but anything at this point is an upgrade compared to that phone. Sluggish and a horrible browser. Hopefully this Touch will be a nice upgrade!

OS 7 = OS 6.1

This will most likely roll out on the new devices whenever they come out. July-October is my guess.

QNX based Blackberries are most likely a year away. I'm guessing at that point it'll be named OS 8.x

This will most likely roll out on the new devices whenever they come out. July-October is my guess. Crackberry announced that Vodaphone UK will be releasing the Bold 9900 'Soon'. July maybe? I'd be incredibly surprised to see that come out in the UK before North America, as the 9900 is the first follow up to the amazingly successful Bold (which, to toot my own horn I broke news of way back then.... nobody believed me initally!)

QNX based Blackberries are most likely a year away. I'm guessing at that point it'll OS 8.x

I'm just hoping that this model will be better than the Bold 9650. I wanted to get that device until I kept on reading about all the battery and signal strength issues. I kept my 8330 going all this time and now it's really nearing end of life. Camera's broken, etc. I'm sure this until will be a great upgrade if things actually 'work' with the unit.

I consider (I may be wrong) The 9650 to be somewhat of a 'cheapie' model.

It is comparable to the 9780 hardware wise, but looking at it the external hardware (casing, keyboard, etc) reminds me of the 'plasticy' Curve lineup. Cheaper materials, cheaper phone. And even compared to the 9700 for music playback, it has half the battery life!

The 9900 should be like the original Bold, but refreshed hardware and slimmer.

Don't hold your breath thinking 6.1 will become OS 7. I seriously doubt that it will.

unfortunately RIM has an excuse not to use power efficient dual-core cpu's . those in the PlayBook can be used at 600mhz/core and still accomplish quite a lot. the competition is able to use dual-core cpu at 1ghz and managing a full day now; nvidia Tegra 2 is used in ALL Audi 2012 lineup cars for the MMI system which also uses QNX so the coding experience is there with Dan Dodge's team. so the excuse for keeping us waiting is getting a bit thing & long in the tooth.

Apparently, some developers do not want to code new apps for OS7. They're waiting for QNX.

I'm waiting for QNX. The OS7 devices look sweet, but I just renewed. By 2013, QNX devices should be available.

I would hate to see what other devices are out by that time. Hopefully QNX is released well before then. Otherwise, they will more than likely be further behind the ball.

Maybe, but I don't need to be on the bleeding edge of the technology race to be happy. OS6 is capable, if a little slow. QNX should be just about right for me.
