Okay so I want to explain the issue that happened to my vzw 8130 and why I had to spend 3 hrs with RIM trying to figure out what happened. Normally I had content protection enabled and didnt experience any problems. Now yesterday when I installed vzw's new OS update is when it went wrong. As I am sure all of you experiences BB users know, that when you do an OS install, that the wizard will make a backup of the device before doing the wipe and then re-install the backup to get the device back to way it was after the update. Now what happened was when the wizard made the backup, it was either encrypted or decrypted wrong and caused the backup to corrupt. So when the OS finished updating and re-installed the backup, i was faced with a problem that my device calendar had 111 entries in it but when I tried to sync with Desktop Manager, it couldnt read my device calendar and thought there was nothing there. Basically my whole calendar became corrupted. I could add and delete entries on the device but DM wouldnt recognize the changes and wouldnt sync. So in a nutshell after all the steps to figure it out, we went to the last resort, which was to disable content protection and wipe the handheld and then install another backup (I do daily backups so I just used the day before the OS loader backup.) When all was said and done I got the device to work and its back to the way it was.
I would like to share what the RIM tech told me. He said for the individual user content protection isnt necessary and a pw on the device should be sufficient enough. He said that the purpose for content protection is this scenario. If someone stole your blackberry, opened the device up, desoldered the cpu and then resoldered it to another device to try and hack the information on it. Ultimately content protection would protect against a situation like that. So unless all your BB users out there are carry Area 51 files then maybe you can disable content protection so you dont go through the same problem of having encryption errors
