Does anybody know if there is an app that counts the characters you have typed in emails? This would be nice as I uses emails to send to friends as SMS, since I dont want to pay extra fees for SMS.

Do your friends have Blackberry too? If so, BB Messenger is free no matter who your carrier is I believe.

It's not free. It's just included in the blackberry data plan you pay for monthly... typically about $30-$40 per month.
