Notification Demo Help needed

Hello,
I'm new to BlackBerry Development and somewhat new to development in general. I do have some basic programming experience (Visual Basic, HTML, SQL) and I'm starting to learn Python (which I hear helps with Java and Javascript).
Anyways, I'm trying to develop a simple notification for the community non-profit where I work for our BlackBerries. We currently have Verizon Storms running BBOS 5.0, but we're slowly replacing them with Curve 3Gs and other BBOS 6.0 devices. If I have to develop the code for one or the other OS version, it would be BBOS 6.0.
Here's my assumption (please tell me if I'm wrong): The Notification Demo that comes with the Java Application Development software (Java plugin for Eclipse) is essentially a ready to use notification that just needs to have a trigger configured.
Here's where I need help:
1. How do I make the trigger a "High Importance" and/or a "Level 1 message" (either one will do) from email?
2. How do I add a repeating alert (not just a one time occurrence) the will continue until an event causes it to stop?
3. I'd prefer to make the repeat interval a selectable option within the sounds profile for this notification, but if it's much easier to set a fixed interval in the code, then I'm okay with that too.
4. I need the repeating alert to stop once the messages application is opened.
I haven't submitted a request for the signed API that I'll need (I think there is only one- if there are more, please let me know), but after I get it working in the simulator successfully, I plan to do so.
From my perspective, this shouldn't involve major code rework- but that's why I'm reaching out to all of the experts (you)!
Any help/advice you can offer is greatly appreciated,
~Mark
