I've just come from a G1 to a 9700. Android is amazing in concept (being an early adopter), but it still needs another 18 months to mature. Although the Nexus almost swayed me back, I am going to stick to my guns on the 9700. It does everything I want (bar slow web browsing - although I use the IP modem and tether more often).
I did look at the Droid, but I think Motorola has done the right thing in the wrong way. Looks and feels like the device makes android go backwards with that clunky keyboard. The keyboard on the blackberry (or any other RIM device) is definitely superior to any other physical keyboard (which I struggled on the G1 because of the clunky side).
The 9700 should win hands down as a communication device

@nicollealexis: No way is it clunky! It's even smaller that the previous Bold and the Curve.
