Default Rolling 4.1.7 upgrade

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

Has anyone experienced any issues carrying out a rolling 4.1.6 to 4.1.7 upgrade?

Any sync issues with a 4.1.6 BES once the schema has been upgraded to 4.1.7?

I have 6 4.1.6 BES to upgrade but the customer wants it staggered over several nights and i am trying to convince them to do it in 1.

when you say staggered, do all the BES servers use the same database?

Hi,

Yes, all 6 BES use the same SQL database. I have tried to explain to the customer that we need to bring all 6 BES down at the same time, backup the SQL DB and then install SP7 & MR2 to each BES on the same night. They are adamant that the downtime is unacceptable and require that the upgrades are staggered over a few nights. We would prefer not to be running 4.1.6 servers under a 4.1.7 schema but the customer insist that their carrier have told them there will not be an issue without compatability.

You don't have to upgrade all 6 servers at the same time. But remember that the management console must match the DB version. That means when you upgrade the first server, the DB will be upgraded. From then on, you need to use the 4.1.7 managment console. Find the details here

Managing a mixed version environment

Also, why not go to 4.1.7 MR3?

Slight delay on testing MR3 in our test department so will just go with MR2 for now.

What would happen to any 4.1.6 servers that are operational during the 4.1.7 schema upgrade? Would i need to shutdown all BES, carry out the upgrade on 1 BES and then bring the remaining 5 BES up, still on 4.1.6?

Although the upgrade guide doesn't say you need to do that, I would stop the BES services on all BES servers, do the upgrade and then start the services again.

To minimize downtime, you could also do the DB upgrade on the SQL server in advance as per upgrade guide:

Upgrade a BlackBerry Configuration Database

If you are not a database administrator and you do not have permissions to modify the BlackBerry® Configuration Database, you
can request that a database administrator with the appropriate permissions upgrades the BlackBerry Configuration Database
before you run the setup application and upgrade the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server.
Before you begin: Verify that you configured the proper permissions on the database server.

1. Log in to the computer that hosts the database server as a local administrator or using a Windows® account that has SQL
administrator permissions.

2. Copy the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation media to the database server that hosts the BlackBerry Configuration
Database.

3. Extract the contents to a folder on the computer.
Upgrade Guide Upgrading the BlackBerry Enterprise Server using the cutover upgrade process and upgrade the existing BlackBerry Configuration
Database

4. Navigate to <extracted_folder>\Database.

5. Open the BesMgmt.cfg file in a text editor.

6. Change the file to include information that is specific to your organization's environment.

7. Save and close the file.

8. Open a command prompt window.

9. Navigate to <extracted_folder>\Database.

10. Type CreateDB.exe BESMgmt.cfg.

Unfortunately im not allowed to touch the SQL server and to get one of the SQL team to run an upgrade for me is a big no no!

The client will just have to accept an hours downtime at least while i upgrade 1 BES and the schema.
