Bold .247 Too Good ?
Please Login to Remove!
.247 has been quite remarkable given recent versions.
However the radio has a bit of a peculiarity - its always good. The Battery life is amazing but not consistent.
What Gives? -
How is it possible to have 4-5 bars 3G and drop to searching for network.
What makes the battery hold 90% so long then drop to 60% disproportionately.
Yeah I know alot of things are in play here but I gotta wonder...
Dropped calls
Battery Runtime variable
3G suddenly got real strong everywhere
Hmmm...
Anyone Else.

Haven't noticed much difference with battery or radio, I have to confess.
I have noticed more crashes (1 to 2 a day) and videos have started freezing on me again (was fixed for me in 244).

Didn't notice the battery issue until you mentioned it. I'll keep my eye on it for a few more days and see what happens.

Update
Definately something odd going on.
Radio strength seems to drop when device is inactive.
i.e. when pulled from holster the signal boosts to full and if left idle for 10 minutes or so the signal drops and fluctuates until I initiate some action.
Whats problematic is that when the signal fluxes long enough the radio drops to EDGE which often requires a Radio toggle off/on to get back to 3G. The EDGE stregth is rarely if ever above 3 bars. Also too often a voice stream is interupted when Data arrives or a second call comes in.
I suspect 3 possibilities :
1. Power management (battery) has come to be King.
2. Battery and/or Radio Signal does not report accurately.
3. ATT EDGE network is becoming unreliable (accessible ) in my environment.
9000 4.6.0.247 - unbranded - BES w/active Bold deployments.

To be honest,
I think 3G is overrated. I also have an Unlocked/Unbranded BOLD and i have to say that set to 2G, my battery life can go two full days and that includes voice calls, GPS and just fiddling around with the phone like we all do, we just can't see that screen dimmed huh? lol.
If your EDGE network would've been good, which is NOT, then you'll have better luck, at least with battery.

i got .247
battery life does seem longer. coverage is better as well, and im in an EDGE only place.
3G isnt that much of a need for me. mine is still branded, and i cant manage to unbrand it, so i deal with it searching for 3G alot, and i STILL manage to pull more than a day on it... unless of course i play simcity on it all day =P

I've described my experience with 'odd' and 'peculiar' because some things don't make sense to me. So many people are having such great experiences with .247 and other versions and still the spectrum between excellent and poor remains. What is the commonality? Network and Location.
Maybe ATT's decision to eliminate 2G selection is based upon service settings which in spite of unbranding has practically eliminated the option.
e.g. how can an EDGE only device (83xx) get good signal side by side to a Bold which gets weak at best.
The Irony: 3G works great when it works but when I need EDGE and I want EDGE it seems to be unavailable. The Sum is to use an OS version effective (agreeable) with the Network and location of the User.

The battery life on this build is horrible. The previous beta version; I used to charged the battery, and could go 2 or 3 days without recharging. On this one, I need to recharge every day.

So far, the .247 build is the best so far for me...at least now that I used CrackMem to remove the pesky Visual Voicemail application from my Bold so that I have my voicemail notification back. I have, however found some glitches...
Pros:
-Much improved battery life...as good as I had with the Seidio 1650mAh battery on my previous Bold!!
-Smoother, quicker, faster navigation
-Seemingly improved RF and incoming call quality
Cons:
-"white screen" occassionaly when pulling Bold from holster
-Some occassional freezing
-More common 3G to EDGE to GPRS fluxuation

.247 is a really good build. Ever wonder why the Bold hasn't got a leak lately, because we don't need one. :p

I'm finding a lot more problems with .247 than I had with .237 but having a hard time going back to the old load. Can anyone help? Also, how did you get rid of the VVM? I want my MWI indicator back.

Update Final.
.247 ,Now is Good, Very Good.
Yeah I got it. Took quite a bit of work to get to a clean install (essential) but I finally got it.
Observed: ATT 3g/2g is a problem, A Big problem.
Resolve: BB 9000 4.6.0.247 - BES - Unbranded - EDGE Only.
Result: Tested on 3 Devices over 7 days with near identical sets.
-Memory +/- 6% variance over 24 hours (no reboot)
-Battery 48+ hours at idle (sleep) 30+ hours moderate data (no call)
-Radio 3+ hours talk time (over 2 days) , 2 connection failures, 3 dropped calls(3 devices)
NOTE- 3rd Apps (specifically sync feature) on 3g/2g produced such varied results that no conclusion could be made. However, the 3g/2g environment did produce less than expected performance (data speed) overall when compared to a good EDGE connection.
CONCLUSION: 3G technology offers benefits which with ATT's management has done nothing more than degrade an otherwise outstanding Device. Given the increasing mobile media rich environment the EDGE capability has reached its maturity and 3G should not be considered a replacement but rather an enhancement.

So does this OS make the Bold an EDGE only device on ATT? I always said I'd only buy a Rogers Bold because it can be set to EDGE only.

Bold on the EDGE
ATT doesn't deserve the Bold. The OS(.247) or any for that matter doesn't make a difference relative to the media centric priority ATT has tuned it's network towards. There is truly a fundamental difference between Iphone users and Blackberry users - and at the core one is entertaining and the other is that and everything else.
Bold EDGE Only with OS .247 - Now thats what I'm talking about.

There have been good builds and bad. I have had the highest level of success (directly related to my needs and coverage) on .167, .190, and .210 . Naturally, YMMV.

One weird thing i have noticed (Don't know if it's just me), is that the stock alarm application has a "WEEKDAYS" only bug.
The bug, doesn't reach all the way to JUST Friday morning.
i.e. If i set my WEEKDAYS only alarm to lets say 7:00am, it activates AFTER SUNDAY 12:00pm and SHOULD deactivate on FRIDAY, which is the last day for the WEEKDAYS only setting. Preferably, the alarm should either deactivate after you disable the alarm to finally get up from bed.
The bug is causing the alarm to end on THURSDAY after 12:oopm and also, i CANNOT select the alarm to turn on from withing the alarm application itself, it sets by going into the clock first.
I hope i explained myself right.
