Interesting article. Couldn't help but notice that HTC was missing from the handset survey results and T-Mobile was missing from the carrier results.

It would also have been very interesting to see some demographics on the respondants (gerography, age, etc.)

Surveys are like chainsaws-very useful if you know how to start them, worthless if you don't.

If they included business users as a demographic, those numbers would change dramatically.
Heck, any survey questions can be skewed to produce whatever results the surveyor wants.

Well, in light of the recent class actions against them for locking against 3rd party apps, etc... they had to do something...

P.S.; Yes, I know Apple subsequently backed down on the app issue. Like I said, they had to do something. I know long time loyal Mac users who were so pissed about recent events that they began talking to me about migrating their shops to *nix.

That 7% market penetration for the Mac is bound to suffer from this.

I don't see the iPhone issues doing much damage to the Mac fan base. A large portion of the iPhone buyers are not full Mac users.

I agree with all the above posts about the level of reality that surveys show, and these results clearly exclude businesses. I would have some serious trouble finding a head of IT at any large company opting for an iPhone (first version) as a smart business move. Meanwhile BB's are actually incorporated into business models around the world.

The iphone was not created for the business demographic, so it doesn't matter. Its doing quite well for who is was intended for.

fyi- the shop I referenced has over 30 workstations and the principal has been using Mac since before Win3.0 existed. So I would stand by my comments that Apple turned some otherwise very loyal customers into extremely unhappy campers.

Wow! You must fly high there in NJ if that's a small business to you I'd classify as SME. But I don't want to quibble. It was merely intended as an example, of which I happened to have first hand knowledge, to illustrate the larger point - that Apple angered a lot of users with the recent stunts they pulled. But you are probably correct.

To add my 3rd and 4th cent; the market and users of all the various platforms will feel an effect of the iPhone (and the Apple mis-steps). I have always thought Windows Vista would still be system blue & gray if it wasnt for the GUI detail that Apple lives on. Apple tends to influence the market that way.

So the next round (post iPhone) of phones and smart devices will look to add things that the iPhone has introduced. Especially if there are unhappy people that move away from the Apple products.

I personally will never own a first version iPhone, but I'm excited to see what comes in the wake of all this iPhone attention.

Its already happening. HTC and LG already have iphone like smart phones on or soon to be on the market.

Well in 3rd quarter this year they were #3 in computer sales in the US. Dell, HP and then Apple. Up to 8% now btw. 4th quarter numbers are out soon.

And I agree, surveys can be made to support any desired result. But its here none the less, just look at the blackberrycool stories for surveys that are written to support RIM. Also, the owner of this site has an iphone and even started another site for it. iphonesource.com

Well I have both BB 8300 & iPhone. Believe me BB 8300 is much better than iPhone,considering all the email and messaging stuff, but if you go for the look then iPhone is a good looking one

Apple iPhone Rs. 40,000 (US $ 656)

Both unlocked and ready to use on any network.

So it costed me only around one g to have them both.
