Default 9900 Speaker sounds very faint

Please Login to Remove!

The alarm on my 9900 (unlocked Rogers running on ATT) went off this morning and I could barely hear it, so I tried playing music/using the speaker phone and with the volume turned up all the way, I can barely hear anything. Music is louder when played through the normal call speaker than through the speaker on the back. I pulled the battery (after turning the phone off) last night as the phone was running slow, but am not sure how I could have damaged the speaker opening the back with my finger? Everything was fine yesterday.

I wiped the device (JL_Cmdr) and upgraded to 7.0.0.1672 today and am still having problems. The touch screen stopped working today but reseting the device to factory defaults fixed that problem.

Any suggestions/ideas on how to fix the speaker issue? I haven't installed any applications after upgrading and am still having issues.

Thanks.

I really doubt you did anything to damage it, short of dropping it hard or getting it wet -- which you haven't done, right?

But are you saying the speaker was fine and now it is faint, or has it been faint from the start?

And I assume you have tried audio tracks that you know have a good volume, also correct?

Edit: By the way, you should try a hard reset....With the power on, remove the battery for a minute. Then test.

Phone was working fine before, has not been dropped or gotten wet.

I've been using the example movies that come with the bb, various songs and also calling voicemail and putting it on speaker phone: all are very faint. If I shove the speaker up to my ear I can barely hear anything.

Edit: I also did a hard reset (pulled battery while phone was on) and no improvement.

I'm wondering if the device thinks it is on headphones. Is there any icon indicating it is? This is a wild guess based on issues with other models in the past, and sometimes also caused by a piece of dust or dirt in the jack receptacle.

No icon for headphones is showing (I've had the problem that you described on my 9700). I think it would also be a problem when talking on the phone and the speaker phone should be fine?

I think you are right about it being a problem on the phone, also, if that were indeed the issue.

Could be the speaker phone speaker has failed.

Are the volume up and down buttons working when you are listening on the regular phone speaker?

The volume up and down buttons work using the regular phone speaker, and when I turn the volume up all the way on the rear speaker, I can barely hear anything. The speaker still works, it is just very quiet.

If there is a problem with the phone, any suggestions on how (if?) one can get a replacement from Blackberry if the phone was bought on ebay?

The seller is who you would go to with a warranty claim, not RIM (unless you had bought it directly from RIM). You should seek an exchange or your money back from the seller.

My suspicion is the speaker problem is intermittant (or maybe was, and is now broke for good) and the seller knew it, and therefore the sale.

See what others say on the best way to deal with the seller. I'm not a good source for help on that point.
