OP needs to talk to carrier again and get clear on what's what. Likely they switched him from the regular mobile plan to the BlackBerry plan and all is well. But it may pay to confirm.
I had a Samsung Galaxy S running on a 500MB per month data plan. After I got my BB I tried using that same plan and nothing would work on the phone (AppWorld, BBM, YM, etc). Went back to my carrier and he told me I had to quit the 500MB and get the BB BIS (two choices 5MB/month for 12 euros and 100MB/month for about 23 euros). I did the change and now am on a 5MB plan. The carrier said the way BB compresses data should be more than enough for running apps like, mail, social, messaging. I can't imagine this, but oh well...
5mb plan seems very little I know that for most carrier they have the smartphone data and the BB data both should be the same price no matter what. Some carriers could be different though

My carriers BB BIS 5MB data plan is 2 or 3 euros more than a regular 500MB data plan
