Open an emailed pdf or video attachment

I read on hear where it says you can open pdf's and video's that are emailed to you on the BB - I've also so seen where it says you have to convert it or open it a different way??? Please clue me in. When I received a pdf or video I can't open the attachment - no option to. I can open pictures. Thanks for any help!
