Wait about a month or so and get 4.5 the official way.

Negative.
There is no 4.5 device software for the 8310 from AT&T yet.

The OP did not ask for an AT&T released OS for the 8310.

And using the OS in the Sticky referenced above, is an official OS.

Well naturally, since the OP has a 8310 from AT&T and is looking to update to 4.5 the only official way to do it is to load 4.5 code from AT&T.
Sure the 4.5 8310M device software is official but loading it onto another carrier's device isn't. Thats how I mean

The OP's post, as quoted above, did not say anything about using an AT&T released OS. The OS that was provided to the OP was an officially released version. I see what you are saying, and if that is how you want to upgrade, that is perfectly fine. The OP wanted to know how they could upgrade and the answer was provided. To each their own.

Oh, ok.

But it doesn't make it not "official" just because you say it isn't "official".

Since AT&T does not ban or restrict you from upgrading your device... then getting it from AT&T is NOT the official way of getting it. Upgrading your device from a RIM based OS IS an official way.

Every OS is RIM-based. RIM gives the base device software to the carrier devs and then they adjust it accordingly (for example, see Verizon's GPS API deal).
Since every device software is tailored to each carrier and its intended device, how would anything but the device software driectly from AT&T be official?
Straight RIM device software is still considered beta and thus not official. Its RIM only/internal for a reason.

Wrong, just wrong. Each carrier tests it and posts what they want out there which that carrier will support.

I don't know why you started this debate, you've made your point and so have others (and I).

None of this has anything to do with the users request.

It's not internal once they release it to a carrier, nor is it beta. Additionally the software released is not tailored to a vendor persay, if that were the case then the software would not contain the files and codes for ALL carriers in each release. 4.5.0.52 was released by TIM Italy yet still contains the files for AT&T. AT&T simply has not released a version yet. The carrier does not alter the software, they release it as recieved from RIM. As stated by kaiyasmom, AT&T does not anywhere state that you can not update your device using another available carriers release, and believe me if they did not want you to do it, they would clearly state it.

The carriers do NO adjusting of the software. If the carriers need a change, then a new version is created and given a new version number.

The vendor coding of the device determines just exactly what is loaded to the device during an OS install. There is no difference in the OS itself.
