Default BIS plan and APN setting

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all:

I am on BIS unlimited plan. As I start installing and using more application like gmail and google map, I worry that my carrier will charge for data usage on top of my unlimited BIS plan.

Can I safely assume that if I don't set APN setting at option=>advance option=>tcp, I will not get additional data charge?

Thanks,

Sim

That's not going to change your data usage through the carrier. If your data plan is unlimited, why would you be worried about being charged??

Because some carriers offer unlimited data plan; but only when you use the Blackberry APN. They charge extra if you use the carrier's APN for instance when streaming or using some 3rd party applications
If you delete all the APN configuration you won't be charged extra but talk to your carrier to clarify this matter

What do you mean by BlackBerry APN??? You need to use the APN associated with your carrier. You can't use a different APN.

I'll start by saying that an APN is the access point to the Network. Opposite to other brands BlackBerry devices uses several APN; of course you use your carrier's network to connect to all of them. The BlackBerry APN or BIS-B configuration is provided trough the service books and can't be modified. The APN configuration under Options is only for the carrier specific configuration. But if the unlimited data plan doesn't include navigating trough this APN you will be charged extra.

In addition to NOT setting the APN under options you may have cause to worry about eWap.
My carrier charges for data through it's APN and through eWap, I have never knowingly used eWap but I get charges every month (some for $100's) against it.
My conclusion is that the BB tries to use BIS (and/or Wifi) but drops down to eWap if it can't connect through BIS.
You can delete the WAP settings in the Service books section and this solves the problem but, annoyingly, they re-appear at random intervals and I have no idea what causes this.
My Carrier says it cannot STOP the eWap access and happily bills me for it although I have had only minimal charges since I deleted the WAP settings in January!

I always thought that you got better or more consistent internet access when you set APN setting at option=>advance option=>tcp and sometimes browser doesn't work, or doesn't work as well without this setting. Ignoring a potential cost extra charge per post#5 (which I've never experienced), is there a reason not to set tcp? Is my assumption above about better browsing or data network connections correct?
