Hi David,
Yes it would appear that that is the case, as it sprung to life as soon as I swapped the sim cards.

Hi David,
This must be the case, as when I swapped the sim cards over, the wi-fi just burst into life!

Sim card
Morning all,
After reading the last few postings, I have had a thought. My 8120 didn't come with A NEW sim card, as I'd done an upgrade I am using the sim from my K800i, would this prevent me from accessing the wifi network???? Do I need to get O2 to send my an 'wifi activated' sim card?
All replies gratefully received

Ok, after a phone call with O2, they tell me that the sim card doesn't make a difference (?)
What they are telling me is that to connect to my FREE home wifi I have to buy a £7.50 CLOUD bolt on, on top of my BIS tariff. Do I need this or are they just talking rubbish again???

o2 are talking complete sh*t as usual.
I'd try a new sim, I think it said somewhere earlier in the thread how to go about getting one from an o2 store.
forgot to add, the latest version of the OS is stickied thread at the top of the 8100 discussion forum

Sorry to be a pain, but this link says it's for Orange, not O2, does that matter?
Thanks

Yeah, I wondered the same myself to begin with, but then went and installed it anyway. I did back up the device first just in case it all went horribly wrong but it worked like a charm
I think as long as you install an 8120 OS I don't think it makes any difference what provider it comes from.

My SIM card is still the one I had with my 8100, and I get full wifi access to BB infrastructure. The trigger for me was sending the Service Books again from the BIS O2 web interface, to ensure that I had the BES version for Provisioning.

Mike G,
O2 are talking herds of male bovine species. From my experience it does not matter whether you are on the latest software, the sim card must be enabled for O2 wi-fi in order for your 8120 to work with wi-fi. So using the sim from your old phone will not work.
However, confusing as this issue is I can only relate my experience.

Essentials
Hi guys
I now have the latest device software, I've refreshed my service books....still the same. I thought it may be some access issue with my computer at home, but it won't work on my mate's wireless network either. My son's new laptop came wireless enabled, opened it up, turned it on and away it went.....I expected my 8120 would do the same...Ha!
For those of you that have solved this mystery and got wifi working as it should (with a green status symbol), can you please tell me what the critical settings/actions are so I can check it's not just me being a plonker.
Thanks...Mike

ok So far I've:
- upgraded the OS to the latest version (link in one of my posts above)
- gone into Options>Advanced>Host Routing Table and from the menu within there, selected 'Register Now' to resend the service books. Can't remember whether or not I had wifi enabled when I did this.
Got a msg from Blackberry saying it had been registered, so on checking the service book for provisioning, it now said BESPRV-EU
- Went into Manage Connections and enabled the wifi
- Set up a wifi network > scan for networks
this found my home wifi network
once I'd entered in the relevant passkey, it connected ok with a green light
I'm guessing that this is pretty much what you've done yourself, just minus the green light bit
it will show the yellow icon if the wifi is on, but no wifi network connection. I have this at work where although I can see the wifi, I can't set up a connection to it.
I haven't tested this out on any other wifi network, so I don't know whether I get the green light anywhere else other than home.

Tornadodivine - Yup, done all that, my home network doesn't ask for a passkey though as it's open so I should connect straight away. It even says on the top of the screen 'O2 UK - Home Network', I just can't get the 'green light'
Geezer - I've got another query email in with the O2-Blackberry dudes, they should reply today, I've given them everything that I've tried and no, the sim card is the only thing that I haven't changed, originally they said it wasn't important, maybe they'll change their minds this time!

Mike - have you tried with a wifi network that requires authentication?
just curious because the only difference between what I've done and what you've done is the wifi authentication. I will set my wifi to open when i get home and see if I still get the green light.

I haven't mate, no, I don't know of any to be honest. I would have thought it would work the other way though.....but who knows!
If O2 fail again with their reply, I'm going to ask them for a new sim card see if that does it. If not, I don't know what else to try.
Thanks for your help anyway

Bad news Mike, I tried this with my home wifi set to no security and it still worked.
It's very flaky though, took several attempts to connect and get an IP address from the router, and same again when I reset the security back to authenticated. But that's probably more my router than the phone.

I tested mine in an Apple store, which has open access, and it worked fine too.
