I am writing an application to read the phone call log for my personal use. I have no intention of selling it commercially.

Do I still have to get the set of code signing keys or is there any other way?

Unless RIM finally got around to updating their site, the keys are only $20, not the $100 that I've seen referenced.

There is no correlation between the device PIN and the keys.

The PIN that the keys are referring to, you make it up. This is YOUR personal id number that you create.

The PIN is a 10 digit number that you will need each time you want to sign the app. It is sorta like a password... this has nothing to do with any individual BlackBerry pin.

The PIN is not needed to sign the app, only the password.

The pin is used to order, and then activate, the keys. This is to verify the identity of the party receiving the keys.

Ahh yes, he's right. There's a separate password you make that's required to sign the apps. The PIN is only used when activating the keys they send you.

You put in any 10-digit number that you are absolutely certain you will still remember when you get the keys.

OK, I've paid $20 and got my keys.
Now, what will happen if I want to reinstall OS on my machine?
I will have to re-register these keys. Am I allowed to do it?
I mean, whatxxx8217;s the difference to re-register keys after OS change and
register on the other (second, third,xxx8230;) machine?

The keys are tied to your machine, either by hardware ID or something like that. If you reinstall Windows, you may be able to reinstall the keys the same way you installed them the first time. Just make sure you keep the three emails they send you with the signature files so you can reinstall them at a later time.

If you get a new machine, the set you have now will not work, so you will have to email RIM. They'll send you a new set of keys and they'll deactivate the old ones. Then you just install them as usual on your new machine. I had to do this, RIM was pretty fast in sending me my new keys so it's not too much of a pain.

But yeah, once you register a set of keys on a computer, they can't be installed on another computer. So one set of keys = one computer you can sign apps on.

I changed PC's a few months ago. AS I recall, I copied the sigtool.* files from the decomissioned machine to the new one.

I think I might have been prompted to re-enter the PIN and password the first time I tried to use them on the new machine.

Other than that, I didn't do anything special.
