Default PTT removal on the 8310

Please Login to Remove!

Has the software for the 8310 been released yet so I can get rid of the PTT application?

Also can someone point me to those nice instructions on editing to accomplish this?

Thanks

Default twofold question...

Okay, I have a question...

a) If I never have run PTT, is it still running? I never downloaded it but i notice it's resident in memory when I do the app switcher.

b) What's the reality of removing it via ALX file? If I remove it from the device is the device going to run faster? Noticeably?

Thanks!

a) yes it is loaded in the background.

b) The reality is that you can remove it. As to speed, your experience may be different. At least the memory is freed up for something else.

What does PTT stand for and what function does or did it provide?

Push To Talk....it's kinda like a wannabe Nextel (Walkie Talkie)thing... I think it's pay per use as well.

Thanks for the info. Downloaded the Vodo software and installed it. Edited the "102" to "220" and save and closed the file. Started the desktop manager and it found no changes. Went in and checked that I have changed it from 102 to 220. Rebooted both computer and device and tried again, no change. The Desktop manager is not finding any change.

Next went into the Java Folder and removed net_RIM_BB_Phone_PTT_APP.cod and KnJCDE.cod. Reran application loaded in Desktop manager and no changes.

Why is the desktop manager not seeing my changes. It sure worked on my other devices but not the 8310!

Help!

Greg,
When you removed those two files from the java folder did you run application loader all the way through to where it tells you what modules will be removed/added? The screen with the check boxes may not show a change.

Hi John.

I after editing the files and saving them, I opened the Desktop manager and clicked on the application loader and it simply found nothing to change. All options are "greyed out" as there was no changes according to the Desktop Manager.

When I removed the two files from the Java folder and re ran the desktop manager and clicked on the App Loader, it did the same and said their were no changes, giving me no more options.....

Has anyone else tried this on their 8310 to dump PTT?

Something is different as I have accomplished this with ease on my other units but I was using the ATT issues OS software for my device and not Vodophones. It is almost like my Desktop Software and 8310 does not recognize the Vodo OS software.

Any help would be nice. I like to get rid of this as when accomplished I can hit switch application and the list of devices os not full across the ribbon and tells me there is nothinbg extra running in the back ground. No the list is full and I have to scroll horiz. to see if anything extra is running.

I still say the ATT?RIM needs to list this right along with the other applications so we can delete it!

One more thing. I am trying to do this on my Vista home computer and have used my XP Pro at the office to do this in the past. It seems to take FOREVER for my Vista computer to load any RIM software and can pause for minutes before it does anything.

That's correct, Greg. Even if it appears as if there is no change, go ahead and go all the way through to the screen where it tells you what modules will be removed and added. You'll see that even though the first screen didn't recognize any changes, that those modules will be removed anyway.

Better check your install. I run Vista Ultimate and it has actually been pretty darn easy to do anything I want with my BB 8300. On the other hand I've practically had to drive the square peg into a round hole to get my wifes BB 8300 to sync reliably. LOL go figure...but I think her issues center around ... umm (whisper) operator error...

For godsakes keep that to yourself...

Default Mission Complete 28.8mb FREE!

OK, I am back. Tried it on my desktop With Vista Ultimate and there are no options after you run the App Loader. "Back" and "Continue" were greyed out. I am sitting there and looking at it wonder what else I can do and I notice that the app loader is saying that it can nt find the software for the device that is connected!

DUMBA$$, why did not I not read that before???

Anyway, pulled my new Dell 1730 laptop out with Vista Ultimate and got in my Lazy Boy and did all of the same steps and it worked perfectly. Do not know why my laptop did better but the App Loader , with no problem, saw the changes and did the whole OS upgrade. GOSH it takes a long time and I still get white knuckles waiting on the device to reboot at the end.

No telling what was wrong but the laptop did the job!

I now have 28.9mb FREE! and the PTT is NO MORE!

Thanks to all who gave support here.

Now if Kentucy will kick Florida's butt or at least beat them up badly enough so my Georgia BullDAWGS can beat them next week, I will be happy! Tebo's legs need to be BROKEN!

Default App Loader took FOREVER on Vista

I accomplished removal of PTT by modifying the platform.alx file as described earlier in this thread. I have Vista on my new laptop (UGH!) and it took about 15 minutes for the app loader to complete. I came close to rebooting a few times but let it run. It worked, but took a very LONG LONG time. Still, all is well now and PTT is as dead as Nextel!
