Default MicroSD & EMail Content

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

I have read in another thread that you can not use the MicroSD for storing email content and/or software and/or their data.

But, this thing has only 64Megs of Ram, and that is used for everything including O/S, Apps, data, etc. So, how does your email fit in there? My email folder, which contains ~ 6 months of emails, is larger than 400Megs?

Do you keep deleting mail?

As a side question, does blackberry hold the whole email in memory or just the subjects, i.e. similar to IMAP?

Thank you.

Email really sits on RIM servers.

So, everytime you open an email, it fetches the content from the server and does not cache this at all, whcih also means you won't be able to look at your email if you are disconnected for some reason?

Are you sure about this?

email is stored in the built-in flash memory and cannot be stored on your sd card....

email is transferred in plain text and 2kb max at a time. if the email is larger then 2kb as you read it the handheld will automatically request more of the message.
No attachments are sent to the handheld--unless you request them, which are then processed and optimized for your wireless device. ie, a 1mb jpg will be scaled down to just a few kb. you can then zoom in and then request more detail if necessary.

and then, on top of this by default content compression is enabled, so the email is compressed on the device.

if we assume that you can compress text at 90% (which from my experience would be fairly accurate), and we factor out that you likely have html or rich-text encoded email and attachments (really, the largest part of most of your email likely) I bet that would take out about 50%, so on the blackberry, your 400 meg mailbox has been reduced to about 20megs.

and if I'm wrong about those ratios, not to worry, the handheld automatically deletes the oldest mail to make way for the newest should you run out of memory.

Does this apply to BIS email as well as BES email?
