contact T-Mobile. no one here has found a fix for this. they haven't updated the IM client since the initial inception of it 7 months ago.

Get rid of the default IM Client and purchase one of the other clients such as Verichat. It has two benefits...One, it adds three new items to your sound profiles so you can control what noises the thing makes. Two, it doesn't use up your SMS Messages.

If it doesn't use up SMS Messages then how are the messages transmitted?

I was surprised to see about 300 SMS message charges on my first bill because
I thought IM would be part of the BB Internet plan. I stopped using IM because
of it.

It communicates via GPRS to VeriChat's servers. They act as an intermediary and send and receive the messages on your behalf and then transmit back and forth to your phone.

I was surprised at the speed at which this occurs...typically from my cell to my home pc...there's only 1-2 second lag from the time i hit enter to the time it shows up on my pc

As for the 300 msg SMS limit...I agree. How they can say unlimited internet and then limit you to how many sms messages you can send borders on false advertising. Oh well. I guess I can't blame them. Most of 'em can't spell internet much less know what it all encompasses

just FYI, on your first bill about IM taking up your SMS messages, you can dispute those charges and get out of them. with that said, T-Mobile also disabled 'SMS over GPRS' which was admittedly for 'Billing' purposes (i.e.-a way for them to make money on shitty products they they include as 'value-add' applications such as the OZ IM client) - this method of sending SMS bypassed the GSM network and was included as part of your unlimited data plan. this does not affect products such as VeriChat.

i simply do not think its right to use SMS over GSM if the other technology exists and works. i also think that more and more people should log complaints with T-Mobile about their OZ IM client implementation and perhaps it may get fixed. while its a nice application to have, VeriChat is not an option for everyone... especially when they are simply being given an option for free by their provider.

I just started using IM, is it true it uses up your 300 sms messages?

in the past, no. you always had the option to SMS over GPRS (but you had to change this). T-Mobile has since disabled this feature (which is only present on newer phones), so it will now send over GSM only, and it will use up your SMS messages.

like i said above, this was made because they were being 'cheated' out of money due to a new technology that was implemented on the handhelds. is it fair to those people who associate IM with GPRS/Data? no. is it fair that people send normal phone-to-phone TXT/SMS messages over GPRS? to T-Mobile, it is not (although i, nor any other customer, wouldn't mind having unlimited SMS bundled with a data plan (or heck, just the BlackBerry data plan)).

but none of that will change unless customers who actually use the product call up and complain. the bugs for the OZ IM client won't be fixed. the possibility of SMS over GPRS won't be re-enabled. nothing.

Okay, little confused now. So, I went to download VeriChat thinking I could get
around having to use up SMS messages when I read this in their Service
Agreement:

OTHER CHARGES: I also understand that sending and receiving messages
will require the use of my data network and SMS services and I will incur
usage charges for this data transfer.

So, will T-Mobile charge me 5 cents a message even if I use VeriChat?
