Z... follow the knife edge process as written in the kb and you will find a lot less grief waiting for you...... shortcuts suck when you are without true support from Blackberry/RIM. I would be willing to bet the time you have spent considering how to cut corners, you would be done with the migration as a knife and in-place upgrade by now.

Hey,

I'm actually not really trying to cut corners. Our existing installation is sitting on old hardware and can cause hiccups every now again. I'm really just trying to get off to a clean start. The knife edge process means I have to install BES 4.0, move my database over, install 4.1.6 on top of that and possibly inherit any issues with my BES 4.0 data.

I really just don't want to have to deal with trying to figure out what went wrong(if anything) during the upgrade. It seems like less hassle this way.

Just trying to get a feel for how the upgrade process went, as I am in exactly the same position as you.

Thx

This is what I would do...

Monday send out an email to download desktop manager and tell them to back their device up or they will lose info. (this usually gets them going)

Send out email on Tuesday that BES will be turned off Friday night and they will have to wipe their device. Also good time to upgrade OS at this time if you want to.

Turn off old BES after backing up license keys on Friday night

Install new BES Friday with keys, test it and send out EA emails so they can activate them selves OTA.

HINT:
You can select them all and right click generate and email activation pass.

I just submitted my purchase order to RIM today for the support contract/migration kit. I will update this thread as I go.

Thanks for the info. I was just told by my sr. sys analyst that we might be deploying a SQL server very soon. If that is the case, I would like to install the BES database on SQL rather than MSDE. That should make future upgrades a little more seamless, no?

Thanks.

1. backup your database on the existing server.
2. Install msde on the server you will be installing 4.1 on
3. run createdb from the database folder in the bes install folder and create a dummy db.
4. restore the backed up db overtop of the dummy db
5. install 4.1 and upgrade the db

if anything goes wrong with the install you still have 4.0 with msde and a 4.0 version of the db on your original server. If the install completes successfully stop the 4.0 server and start the 4.1 one. No need for reactivating users or getting an additional srp.

LOL, it sounds that simple. But there are a bunch more steps.
Might want to point some KBs about it. You might know it like the back of your hand, but OP does knot.
