I don't see how fixing the firmware will fix their network problem unless they want to throttle your level of service by locking the phone into 2G mode.

I have not been on a call when moving out of a 3g area into a 2g area so I haven't experienced a dropped call. But I have noticed that there is quite a lag between when my bold picks up edge when loosing 3g and vice versa. When switching from one to the other, I cannot see a call being sustained. It is almost like you are going from one carrier to another. In fact, when you do a manual network scan the 2g and 3g versions of the same carrier are listed as two different networks.
As has been stated previously, I don't believe that dropped calls will be solved by an OS change. It will only be solved when the 3g network is fully built out.
