Default Why only 48Mbs max??

Please Login to Remove!

I have incredible coverage due to DD-WRT with a WDS setup across a few routers in my house, so coverage is not an issue. The question is why can I not get the 54Mbs that all of my other devices get?? The 8320 is always maxed out at 54Mbs? I haven't seen anything written about the limit, so what are others seeing under wifi diagnostics?? Is anyone seeing anything larger than 48Mbs?? I have 2 8320's on this system and they both are reading the same although the dbm measurements are around -31 which is phenominal. Everything work great, this is just something that has been bugging me. Thanks all.

When I had my 8320 it seemed to always be capped at 48Mmps as well. I don't think I would have noticed any real difference in anything had it gotten to 54Mbps, though.

It might be WAP/Router specific - at home I'm capped at 48 while at various sites at work I'm at 54 - that's on a ATT 8820. My router is a Linksys 802.11 b/g and I had upgraded firmware when I got the 8820.

Does it really make that much of a difference? Your internet connection is certainly much slower than that.

Rofl, exceptional answer :D

I connect at 54mbps (d-link di624) but of course it makes no difference.

Probably the easiest way to test roughly what is achievable is tethered and networked with a desktop. I don't believe it will get anywhere near what the bearer can support.

If you are simply terminating at the BB you wouldn't even approach .11b speeds, the processor would baulk considerably before this (mmm, feel a project coming on ;) )

cheers

Yes it could make a difference as this could slow the other parts of the network down as the routers will throttle themselves to optimize throughput and packet size for the connected devices and my other connections are feeding from the server and not just from the internet (although you are correct with your staement). I know that if a slower protocol or device is on the system you can have a bottle neck which is something I am trying to avoid. Would I notice the difference....no, but it is the principle. I must say that the other day I was playing with the wifi at work and noticed that I was connected at 54Mbs, so it is possible. This is the first time that I had seen it. I was just curious if the device could do it or not and now I know. Thanks for all the repsonses, as now I now and may have to play again with home setups and see if it is router restrictions or setup problems. At work we are using commercial Cisco APs and no problem seeing the full 54Mbs.
