I've met a couple of deaf people that used the original version. They said for $14/mo it was the cheapest data-only device available that would do AIM.
I don't think they even bothered with doing email on it.

I think that The Inquirer took some editorial freedom and went too far when choosing the title of the article. Neither IXI or Synchronica appear to be pushing this as a replacement for the BlackBerry. In their press release, they clearly state "Ogo offering gives the man in the street an affordable and advanced alternative to the BlackBerry." I do not take that as poistioning it as a killer. They are positioning it for what it is, a very cheap, email, web, sms only device for a very low flat rate.
Personally, I used one of these for a short time when AT&T offered them. The interface was fine for what it was, the price was a little high I felt, the device was a little bulky, and it didn't have the integration of the BlackBerry so I returned it. However, I felt that for the right person, it would have worked. One of the things I never understood was why the developers choose anti-aliased fonts on the screen it always made it look cheap and blurry but that was just nit picking.

They're trying to break into the corporate world but I just don't see it happening.

I've also heard the Treo is buggy. I also see that they are marketing so many variants of Treo that it is almost out of desperation rather than demand and superior development of a product. Blackberry is truly "king of the hill" right now.

I've had several Treos and yes, they are buggy. Resets and freezes are a constant problem. I'm forever trying the "latest and greatest" thing to come along so my collection of smartphones, PDA's, and other communication devices means I'll never need to buy another doorstop again. I'd love a consumer model Blackberry with a camera and expandable memory, but even without these features the Blackberry is still king.

its not a business device the device is marketed to kids, when it was on AT&T I think it was $99 with $10/month for each IM service?? Also there was no contract, kids could use debit cards, or pay the bill themselves, in that aspect its not a bad idea, it is not and never intended to replace the blackberry...

A Treo or Maybe a PPC with BbConnector could be considered potential Bb killers just because they have instant email but do multimedia which some people will prefere. But something not even aimed at the same market, thats like saying a hotdog is a blackberry killer, the only way that would be is if the bb user slipped on it and fell ontop of his Bb smashing it. lol

IMHO biggest threat now is:
- PPC, now that latest models have reasonable battery life and better stability. Even push email if your've got Exchange. They're not 'there' yet for those who recognise security and management as the real issues thay are for corps, but the gap is narrowing fast
- Nokia's new device (E61 is it?) with a half decent keyboard is a challenger, I think.
Note I don't think "push" is actually the big issue (some corps run BES's that are so underspecced in a poor environment that "push" is up to 10mins anyway . It's about good hardware (physically robust, and battery life) good software (stability), and good managability (remote, for corps).

A bigger threat would be the Mio A701, windows mobile 5 admitidly but could have some form of Bb Connect or MS Push put onto it, has built in gps competing with the few Bb that do, but would comfortably replace a phone as its small enough, a sat nav device as it can run tomtom/copilot and a few others, an organiser as it will sync with outlook and has an easy input system. The main downsides are no keyboard, but transcribe does work well to my experience, and nowhere offers it with a phone contract.

Ogo is perhaps the weakest of the "BB Killers." Still, the problem with all these "BB Killers," like the Q, is that they target a completely different user base, with the inclusion of a camera, MP3 player, and other multimedia features.
