Question 3g data if I have a 2g data plan (with tmo 9700)?

Please Login to Remove!

I was wondering if it is possible to keep an old 2g blackberry data plan and get 3g data with a 3g blackberry? This is considering T-mobile plans and the swapping of a sim card to out-of-contract tmo 9700. Does anyone have any info or stories?

I've found in searches that AT&T iPhone users got away with a similar trick early on, but AT&T wised up and forced 3g users to upgrade plans. I understand this is of course \possible when trying to do the same trick T-mobile blackberries.

Thanks!

There's no such thing as a 2G or 3G data plan.
If 3G is available in your area, you'll get 3G. You don't need to pay extra for it.

... provided that your phone is compatible with the 3G of your carrier. For example, an AT&T USA 3G phone is generally not compatible with the 3G from T-Mobile USA... nor is a Wind Canada 3G phone compatible with the 3G from Rogers/Fido/Bell/Telus (Canada).

In the case of this forum/subforum, an unlocked AT&T Blackberry Bold 9700 won't get T-Mobile 3G even if you're located in a T-Mobile 3G area and an unlocked T-Mobile 3G Blackberry Bold 9700 won't get AT&T 3G even if you're located in an AT&T 3G area. The same goes with the Canadian carriers that I mentioned above... an unlocked Wind Blackberry Bold 9700 won't get 3G from Rogers/Fido/Rogers/Bell.

I suggest you read the original post again.
The user wants to use a T-Mobile device on T-Mobile's network.

Cool thanks! I was just wondering because (assuming I upgrade my phone through T-mobile at a discount) T-mobile is requiring that I upgrade my USD 19.99/month unlimited blackberry email/data plan to a USD 34.99/month plan (that includes unlimited messaging/txting). The difference must just be the unlimited messaging and not the speed of data.

Yes, I know what the original poster wrote.

I just added my comment because I didn't want anyone reading your post to misinterpret it to mean that if 3G is available in your area, you automatically get 3G regardless of the band your phone is capable of.

If your SIM is from a 2G phone, it may be a 2G sim card... If that is the case, you will only ever get GPRS on your BB...

STOP - T-Mobile (US) doesn't have 2G and 3G SIM cards.

T-Mo will grandfather your 19.99 plan. If the rep at the store says its not possable, call customer support and discuss it with them.

I specifically asked when I upgraded my 8320 to a 9700 today at a Tmo Corp store. My data plan remained at $19.99 after the switch.

Are you suggesting that T-Mobile has two plans now (a 2G and a 3G plan)? If they have one plan today, then the concept of grandfathered makes no sense.

Do they have two data plans now?
