Default OS Update

Please Login to Remove!

Hello every one. I am new to this forum and also new to BlackBerry.
Before i had a nokia phone and it was preaty easy to update device firmaware.
Now if i go to the blackberry website and check for update it says that device is up to date. Even if i see on this forum a new version of OS.
My version is : 4.6.1.101.
Can anyone give me some advices on how to update my OS safely ?
Thank you .

Hi Jkoder,

Don't aways go by the latest OS listed. The latest OS you should have is the one that your network provider recommend. Some network providers update their sofware faster than others and vice versa. If you try to run a newer OS the network provider might not be able to configure all of it. Why ruin a perfectly good phone with other OS that appertain to other countries?

When you get ready to update, don't hestiate to do so just because your provider has not yet released the latest version. The info provided here on BB forums will help you make the update.

I think the majority of us on this forum (my observation, no data to back it up) do update our phones on a regular basis and don't worry about whether or not our own provider has released a particular OS or not. If we did, I think half of the posting on BB forums would cease.

I update my 8900 on a regular basis, and I have not had any problems to date. However, as a precaution, I make sure to keep a copy of the latest OS released by my carrier, which is the one that came with my phone, just in case I have to downgrade it for any reason, such as sending it back to them for repairs. That way, my original OS is but a downgrade away.

Since I purchased my 8900 BB (after Feb 11), I see the updates (versions) .144, .152, .168, .267. Is there an update once every week? Confused!

Nope. Just seems that way. There is no specified period of time for updates. They are more frequent when a new phone or major new OS (such as when 4.5 was released for the Curve 8300 series) is released. It seems to be slowing a little bit on the 8900 but I wouldn't be surprised to see a new one yet.

Actually, the ".267" is not a version. The actual package is listed as 8900 4.6.1.267/4.6.168. The version number is the last number, ".168". I believe the first number, ".267", is a package number.

The .168 version has been out for a couple of weeks.
