"Contacts" do not synch
Please Login to Remove!
Weird one: in-box, calendar, tasks all synch up, but "Contacts" refuses to. Wiped out the device, removed the user from BES, reloaded the device with the latest provider software, setup the user on BES again, activated, and again, everything except the freakin' contacts synchs up. I've done hundreds of these setups, I'm at a total loss here.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Pete

On the device go in to contacts > options > Wireless Sync - set to Yes.

Bah! That options seems to be missing for some reason? The only things that are under "Address Book Options" are
Sort By:
Confirm Delete:
Allow Duplicate Names:
And where there's supposed to be Wireless Synch, there's nothing! Dang it. :(

What device is it? You need to be using a device running 4.0 code.

It's the new RIM 8700, running on T-mobile EDGE v.4.1.0.346.
BB Core Apps version 4.1,
BB System Software version 4.1 as well.
I downloaded the software from T-Mobile yesterday and wiped out the device, reinstalled all software, removed the user from BES, added back in, still no go.

Oh my gosh! I'm having the same problem! It's driving me insane!!!!! What the h_ _ _! This is my 3rd 8700 Blackberry. I returned the first one that I had because it wasn't communicating with the SIM card. But this first one I had sync'd up all my contacts. So I bring the second one home and I get this message "Unable to write or update application data". I did the same thing I reinstalled the software and it kept giving me the same message. So I took it back to Cingular and they told me it was the device, so they gave me another one. Well, I'm still having the same problem with this 3rd device. HELP PLEASE!!!! I called technical support and was on hold for about 2 hours and finally gave up. I'm at my wits end and need a fix. (Now I know why they call them CRACKBERRY'S!)

Enterprise activation has to start before you get the option for wireless contact sync....

In my case, Enterprise Activation never finishes. It remains in status "initializing" and while messages arrive in the mailbox, and the calendar appointments get put in and synched up, the Address Book refuses to do anything.
I am now wiping out the device (again), removing the user from BES, and I am going to to a USB activation direct to the server, not wireless. Will keep you posted.

If your Enterprise Activation (EA) never finishes, dont count on anything to work 100% ;)
Messages and calendars may start flowing, but your problem isnt the contacts not sycning, its your EA not finishing. The contacts are just a sympton (sp?) of the problem.
I've personally found the wireless activations to be more reliable than wired ones.
You already said you are wiping, removing and reloading. Good idea. Let us know what happens.

Well, EA hangs on "Synchronizing service Desktop"
Email is still coming in, and calendar appts are working as well, AddressBook is not. Calling T-Mobile next.

Fixed:
0) Make sure all of the BES services are running under "services"
1) Remove user from BES
2) Wipe the device
3) Add user to BES
4) Go to user properties
5) Go to "PIM Synch" tab
6) Radio button "ON" next to "Wireless Synchronization disabled for this database" for "Tasks", "Memos", "Address Book" (in other words disable synching for now for all apps except Mailbox)
7) Go to "General" tab
8) Set Activation password
9) Go to the device
10) Commence EA
11) Go for coffee
12) Come back, EA should be done with "Mailbox" activated and email in there
13) Go to BES server > user properties > PIM synch and start setting radio button to "on" checking each application to "Bidirectional Synchronization" one at a time. So, set on Tasks, verify tasks synched up, set on Memos, verify, etc.
This worked for us, hope it helps you.
/s Pete

I have also encountered this problem. The root cause was a corrupted exchange mailbox. Re-created the mailbox bingo contacts synched.
