I get this problem too, and I'm interested in troubleshooting with anyone else seeing this problem. I use a Vodafone UK BlackBerry 7290 (with Vodafone UK 4.0.2 firmware)with an Optus (Australia) SIM card, and I suspect it maybe to do with some kind of carrier functionality working against something built into the Vodafone firmware.
Any thoughts?

The first question, obvious but needs to be asked.

Is the phone unlocked?

When I first got the 7290 I had the same problem, at first it will just say sim error eventually it will degrade and restart. At first the fix was a new 64k card that did it but it started up some time later. Since then my service provider came up with a revision of the 64K sim card and since then my 7290 never restarted or had a sim error. Cingular is my provider

This happened to me too, probably because I carry two SIMs with an adaptor.
Quick fix: swith it off and on again.
Or check for a poor contact between SIM-slot in the phone.

Shaggy, you mentioned a revised version of the sim card fixed your problem. What revision is it and how did you obtain it? I have been having the same problem with my 7100g trying to recieve messages from our trouble system at work. It looks like the message is coming through, then all of a sudden it pops up the error. I would really be interested in knowing what revision of card they provided you with so I can attempt to get one.

Thanks,

DM
