Unhappy License migration

Please Login to Remove!

Hi.
I have couple of BES 4.1 servers. One of the server running out of free Licenses.
My question if it possible to move license from one server to another?
What will happen if i will use copy past license from one server to another- i am afraid that i will use active license.Called telus but they told me that the diler of the licenses can help me.
Thanks for help.

Licenses are per BlackBerry Domain which is equivalent to a BES configuration database. It doesn't sound like it, but do the servers share the configuration database?

I think if the licenses are in use it will not let you remove them. If it will let you remove them then you should be able to add them to the other server.

haven't tested this scenario but I have taken licenses off of the server and added them back. Also removed - rebuilt - and added licenses back.

Question license migration

I have three BES servers and I'm moving all the users over to one BES server. All three BES servers have their own database and license keys. Here's my dilemma, can I use the same license key on two servers why I move the users over? I don't want to buy more licenses because server A is going to be shut down after I move the remaining 20 users but while I move them I need to use those 20 CAL's on server B. I can't move all the users at once, it could take several weeks. Does anyone know if running the same CAL on two different servers with two different databases will work? If so, is it legal?

it is a violation of the license agreement to use the key multiple times. You should look to merging the configuration databases

FYI Make sure that they are all "enterprise" servers. If one is "small business" then moving those keys won't work.

I agree that merging is a good option because it looks like you won't have to reactivate the "moved" devices. Should be seemless and won't take weeks.

heheh, seemless Make sure you schedule a nice big window for it too ... 4-6 hours for 2 servers. One merge I did took me 1.5 hours just for 1 database ... 3.5 hours in all. its a lot of sitting there and waiting while the script does it magic.

that is still more seemless than making everyone re-activate. How many users were in the two DB's?

You can remove the licenses from one server and add them to a new one with no problem. (Different SRP and BESmgmt databases)

I had to combine two bes's when we consumed a smaller company. They only had about 20 users so we just reactivated their handhelds.

You can go over the license limit on a BES and it'll remind you every time you open Blackberry Manager that you are over the limit. I was over once while waiting for licenses from RIM and it doesn't affect mail flow to the device or new EA's.
