Last week when I connected my BB9900 to backup my photos etc it displayed a new version, so I did the update.

How do I go back to the previous version, is it possible to restore my phone to the state it was in the beginning of next week, with regards to the software.

No, it was the middle of the night in North America.

Uninstall the current version of the software version from your PC (look in Control Panel/Programs).
Locate the version you want to install (search for it) and install it.
Locate and delete all copies of VENDOR.XML on your PC C: drive
Restart desktop manager and it should find the "old" version.

1. I presume this means - google "blackberry desktop software version xxxx" ?
2. Install to phone ? Will it override the never version on the phone and take it back to the previous older one then ?

Look at the top of the 9900 forum for stickied threads with software versions.

It will ask you if you want to downgrade the software and will load the old version.

I see in my Blackberry desktop software under updates I can see the previous versions with (downgrade). Should I do the steps as you explained above, or can I simply do the downgrade there in Desktop software?

You can downgrade through Desktop Manager.
