I would imagine the OP said this due to the name. Honestly, I have no idea, but looking at the specs and giving it is a RIM device, I would say this far from childish.

I for one would rather have this than the iPad. Sure, the iPad is all nice and stuff, but its HUGE! The playbook is smaller and more convenient if you ask me (from what I have seen and heard). I have seen prices that are WAY under the iPad....CHA-CHING!!!

I'd like to see it soon, that is all i asked for after reading the specs, and be able to leave my laptop behind. I'm tired of having to carry a heavy and big laptop trough TSA lines at airports.

Ok, I can see the OP's question in light of jsconyer's observation, and PlayBook does sort of make me think Fisher Price Play School . . . . But I don't care. As soon as I see "Where to buy" information, I'm ordering/buying.

I have to say spec wise the playbook sounds nice, but what will really make this device successful if how will the os be will it be just an over grown blackberry or will it be a device that will complement the blackberry as in being able to go on line via tether from blackberry also view files on blackberry . There should be a flawless connection between the two devices on all levels .

I dont think that this device sounds childish at all. In fact I think that its a better name than ipad. As soon as I saw the news that RIM will be releasing the Playbook and took a look at the specs and found some videos on it I became instantly uninterested in ever owning an apple product for a tablet, I used to want and ipad but since I much prefer Blackberry over iphone it seems like a logical choice to me to stick with the brand I like best and eventually get a Playbook (i like the name so much better too). I also like that this device will be more portable than the ipad. It will feature a mini-hdmi output so people looking to connect their device to a tv or projector for entertainment or it would be a useful tool for professionals doing presentations as this will eliminate them having to drag a laptop around with them. Anyway, enough of sounding like a sales person lol... I think it will be a great device and if it performs as well as the specs say it should then this device should do quite well and even (hopefully) put up some stiff competition with apple.

Was my first reaction - just thought it sounded like a childrens book. Come to think of it is a big boys toy so it might just work.
The specs look good - be interested to see the pricing when it goes on the market.

If it can accomplish this and allow me to work on basic spreadsheets, word documents, PowerPoint etc. is will be a home run. Wifi and thethering to my blackberry should be a foregone conclusion. (I hope) |

I think the Playbook is a 'tweener' device that will struggle in the market place unless it has seamless itunes integration. Is it a work device or a personal device?
If it is my device then I want a great media experience (first) and it would really, really be nice to be able to read my BB e-mails on a bigger screen.
If it is a work device then media is nice, and mail and documents are priority #1.
I don't see how this seamlessly works without requiring screen locks, remote wiping, and password inputs just like my blackberry does today. If I have the ability to save a document on the device from my e-mail then my administrator will require the ability to remote kill the device. This is absolutely unacceptable if this a personal device.
That leaves it being a work device. I don't see how many companies will pay for an extra device, in addition to a BB and a laptop, for their people.
Seems like a really, really small market. I would buy an ipad/ipod touch and a Virgin Mobile pay as you go 4G wifi router.

It's not a toy.. I think it will have a decent uptake in the corporate market, the same market that Cisco and Avaya are going after. It may have some traction in the consumer market. But this is going after the business market.

I disagree. AFAIK, Android devices don't have iTunes integration, and I think they will really catch on.

I'd be willing to bet that most android phone owners have an ipod or zune for personal entertainment. This device only makes sense to me if I get to leave something else at home. I think the new Galaxy tablet will be a much better barometer for comparison.
....for an individual....
I'm just saying if they want this to be a personal device it has to have a descriminator over an ipad. I'd be real interested to see the proposed BES integration and the limitations it will put on an individual. Plus it appears to only function as a blackberry/BES compatible system. That leaves out about 75% of the smartphone market.
....for a company....
I just do not see companies shelling out for a third device for [the general population of] employees to carry with them on travel. Perhaps it could be a 'less than laptop' solution to give employees in lieu of a laptop. In fact, it may be especially nice to have remote wipe and BB security for international travel.
Also, is that front facing camera for video conferencing? Is it BES server based or peer-to-peer? Many companies would never approve a peer-to-peer application in their IT toolset.
Maybe there is a market there, I'm just struggling to see it be very big.

The business market doesn't necessarily mean employer-issued enterprise use; or rather, some users will pay for the device themselves for personal use that includes "work" tasks that may be professional work, volunteer work, etc. That's where I place myself on the spectrum, and I plan on buying the PlayBook. I want a tablet, don't want to use Apple, want to get away from Windows, don't want to use Android, and will hold out to give the RIM product a try. But it's a fair question just how large that user segment is in the big scheme of things.
