Default Cannot get EDGE on unlocked blackberry ATT

Please Login to Remove!

Ok I am new with all of this but I just purchased a Blackberry storm and unlocked it and followed all the directions in the sticky to get the browser. My problem is that i am only getting "edge" and not "EDGE". I can use the Media Net browser for a minute or so, but then it will not load any more pages. Can someone please help??? My OS is v5.0.0.328

Did you purchase a blackberry data plan? (Media net data is not a blackberry data plan.)

I don't know. My belief is you only get all-caps EDGE when connected to RIM servers, which requires blackberry data plan. If you had EDGE before without a blackberry data plan, I don't have an explanation.

On your old BB 8310, was it AT&T branded? Another question, do you just browse? If so, you will have a browser connection as along you have the correct APN.

I looked at the original post again and saw that medianet works for a little while and then doesn't. With regard to that issue, have you tried the usual things: clear cache and cookies? What about doing a hard reset (battery pull)?

Yes it was AT&T. Yes I only use the browser. I can use MediaNet, but it is extremely slow and sometimes doesnt even work, which i am assuming is because im not on EDGE.

Ok I have been doing some research and it looks like I can swap the file from an older OS that will work better to achieve EDGE. Is there any type of "hybrid OS" I can download that will have this file set up? What radio file would I need and how can I do this? Thank you and forgive me for any noob questions i am asking

A couple things:

You will not have EDGE without a blackberry data plan. You may see edge if you have basic data service, or gprs if edge service is not present on the cell you are in.

The download speed on medianet is going to be slower on gprs than edge. By how much I don't know.

What browser are you using? It can't be the blackberry browser, or else you _do_ have a blackberry data plan. Are you using Opera Mini via carrier data?

Long story short, you are not going to get EDGE without a blackberry data plan. See blackberryfaq.com, and look at the glossary. Search the forum. Don't take my word for it.
If your medianet is freezing, something else is going on. It has nothing to do with the fact that you don't have EDGE.

Its just strange because 100% of the time i got EDGE on my 8310 and I was really hoping this would be functional on the 9530. When I use the Browser it does work and sends me to "Media Net Home".

I don't know why you saw EDGE before without a blackberry data plan.

As far as the browser, I asked what browser you are using. If you don't have a blackberry data plan, then you don't have (or shouldn't have) the blackberry browser. If your BB has wifi, then I suppose you would have the hotspot browser. And then you have the carrier's browser (for example, on my tmobile BB it is T-Zones, and on yours I assume it is the medianet browser).

I installed the AT&T Service Books so that would lead to me having the browser. I just got this phone and it would be awesome if I could do SOMETHING to get EDGE. Has anyone done it before? If not I guess I am just SOL

abuckley, having EDGE on an 8310 vs on a 9530 are two different matters.

IF you have followed ALL of the instructions in the Sticky Note to get EDGE and your browser working on the 9530, then list here ALL of the third party applications you have installed on your Storm;

1.
2.
3.
etc.

And, you must have THE BlackBerry Data Plan on your ATT account.

Another generic data plan will not work.

If you don't have the Data Plan, don't even continue to ask how to do this in this thread, it's a waste of your (and our) time.

I used the directions on crackberry which involved a utility called Crackutil to delete the net_rim_bb_browser_dameon file, install Service Books, then reinstall the file. The Third Party Apps are:

1. All associated AT@T apps such as "Shop Music", "Cellular video", "XM radio", "Music ID", etc.

2. Google Maps.

So is this basically a dead end without the expensive blackberry plan to achieve EDGE?

Yes it matters. And it won't work.

Repeat: You need THE BlackBerry Data Plan.

There's a reason it is called the BLACKBERRY Data Plan

EDIT: just saw posts above. Probably answers my question.

How did you get service books (and keep them) without a blackberry data plan?
