Default What Should I Upgrade To

Please Login to Remove!

I am a big fan of Blackberry, and truthfully, am not bothered by the outages. I am a solo attorney, and use my BB to integrate with my hosted exchange, and love how exchange and the BB work together.

But, as a solo, my BB is also my phone. I am currently using a Storm 2(on Verizon) and well, the phone is getting very long in the tooth. My battery life currently sucks, the phone is noticeably slower than when I got it. The browser blows major chunks, and always has, I am starting to get random reboots, and a reboot takes more than 15 or 20 minutes, which is completely mental. And well, it is plain old.

I want to upgrade/change handsets, but what do I get. I was hoping to wait for a QNX phone, but that seems like it may never happen, especially since BB just stopped developing two of the three new phones. I was also hoping to wait for a 4G phone, but alas, I don't think that is on the horizon for BB. I don't see any point in upgrading to a new phone with out LTE support. However, I am willing to if it makes sense.

There are some really nice Android units out there. Applications galore, very end user friendly, 4G, and there are apparently good email applications that can integrate with my hosted exchange. I am not getting an IPhone.

I am just wondering, what would you guys do in this situation. Stick with my storm, or get a new BB even though it is definitely not the latest and greatest thing, but stick with BB because of the email, and the updated software, whatever it is. Which BB would you choose. OR, Would you/will you/do you expect to get an Android device?

I know no one can tell me what is best for me, just looking for some opinion and thoughts from people, to help shape my decision.

My opinion:

If BlackBerry is working for you, you will probably be happier sticking with BlackBerry.

Who knows when the QNX handsets are going to be released. Who knows what will not be there or be not all the way there when they are released.

Make sure your must have app(s) are supported on OS 7 before upgrading.

Decide what carrier you are going to use (stay with Verizon or switch). Decide which style you prefer, if you aren't already sure.

Assuming the apps are supported, buy the top of the line model in the style you want that is supported by your carrier.

As I say, my opinion.

I agree with Ira's post above. The QNX devices are rumored to be 3Q 2012 - maybe - but don't bet the farm on it.

Thanks for the reply.

OK. Why would you not switch to an Android handset? Especially in light of the availability of 4G LTE (I am sticking with Verizon) Is it simply because you are fine with BB, and therefore, there is no reason to switch.

You can give it a try. The battery life is terrible on most Android devices. I have been using Android as well as BlackBerry for the past 2 years or so and I don't mind Android. But do know that you will get force close messages every now and again, the Market isn't really monitored, so be careful what you download. Security on the device is not what a BlackBerry is.

Other than that, the browser is amazing, plenty of apps to choose from, the device should be quick. Also, 4G drains battery even faster. Go to a Verizon store and play around with it and see what you think about it.

I was replying with my assessment of what was stated in the OP... big BlackBerry fan, use a hosted exchange. So, my opinion is you will be happier staying with what you are comfortable with if it is working for you, if, that is, it is working for you.

Personally, I don't have anything against android devices or iphones. I say use what works best for you.

As far as the speed of the mobile network, I don't get it. I mean it isn't even on my list of what I'm looking for. EDGE was mostly good for me, with wifi available to me half the time. Now 3G is gravy. 4G? Meh. But that's me. It depends on you. Is mobile network speed a driver?

If the BB works for you and isn't broken, why try to fix it with a 'Droid or iPhone device?

I had a client give me an iPhone and paid the bills. I used for a year, decided it wasn't for me and came back to the BB.

Ahhhh, EDGE. I remember my old 8700. Those were the days.

It continue to work for me, mostly. Just, I guess I also looked at myself as being on the cutting edge to some degree. Keeping up with technology, and not letting it pass me by. Seems, if I continue with BB, I may being doing just that, letting it pass me by. But, on the other hand, I am no lemming, and avoided the IPhone mostly since I am a non conformist at heart. Hell, even the Storm 2, much maligned by the BB community, has been my choice for nearly two years now.

Truth is, speed is not really a driving factor at this point. Sure, it would be nice to have the speed. If it was available in a BB, I would get that BB in heart beat. But, the dated OS, and lack of 4G, is bothering me, and in some ways, causes me to think I am just swapping my current handset for another blah handset, which has worked for me for so long, and does 75 percent of what I want/need.

I guess I just can't make the decision quite yet. Maybe just get another BB, see if the company finally does fail, or if they come out with some nice new products, get them, and re-evaluate when and if I need/want a new phone in the future.

Thanks for the help guys.

I have often been seduced into trying other platforms based on some new "bells and whistles" features. It all sounds so cool, but then it turns out I don't use those features. I did it with the Palm Pre (WebOS), the HTC Evo 4G (Android), and the HTC Arrive (WP7). I'm currently trying an iPhone. But I've always come back to my BlackBerry. It just works the way I do. I'm not a gamer, I don't do much web browsing, and I use a real camera for photography. If these things are a priority for you, then consider an iPhone or an Android phone. (skip WP7 though)

If messaging, scheduling, and PIM functions are what's important to you then BlackBerry still has no equal. You just have to be honest with yourself about how you use your phone. The decision becomes much more simple then.
