Default Why is new Bold 9900 NOT 4G Speed?

Please Login to Remove!

Blackberry is touting the new Bold 9900 as superfast with a 1.2 ghz processor and new OS7, but why aren't they making it with 4G speed?

Isn't 4G supposed to be faster and wouldn't the combination be better?

RIM was slow to get to 3G. Plus, having been using a 4G device for the better part of a year (Evo 4G since June 2010), yes 4G is a lot faster, but you sacrifice battery life to get that speed. And BlackBerrys have always had better battery life than the competition. I think that RIM would want to work out how to maintain that.

I would suggest that RIM builds what the carriers want to sell. If AT&T wanted a 4G BlackBerry, RIM would build it.

Agree with NJ. If a carrier wanted it now, they would get it now. I guess they didn't/don't.

It is coming soon. I don't think it has officially been announced but from what I heard it was shown at WES a couple weeks ago.

Have you looked in the "Rumors" section to see if there is an update.

Your call on going Android or waiting. If you go 'Droid, we will leave the light on for ya.

Agreeing on the agreement.

Why would RIM use a radio that costs a couple of dollars more when the carriers they sell to don't ask for it?

Actually, if we're speaking about AT&T, RIM doesn't need a new radio, it won't have any affect whatsoever on battery life, and can be accomplished via a simple OS upgrade to display "4G" on the homescreen instead of 3G, anytime they want to do it. I'll actually go out on a limb and say you'll probably see it rebranded that way soon - as that's exactly what AT&T has done here. Its all marketing-speak. AT&T has quietly been rebranding their existing 3G network as 4G without any new technology deployments, and are coming out with rebranded phones too.

So, your AT&T 9900 is/will be "4G speed" whether you knew it or not.

This is correct, T-Mobile is doing the same thing. They are using their HSDPA (3.5G) as 4G. It is not true 4G, but you will get what they're calling 4G speeds.

I was reading this summary from the BB World Conf and on it says that the 9900 will be 4G.

Errrrr... no idea which carrier would provide the service as for what we know none can at the moment.
Anyway, the thread is "Why is new Bold 9900 NOT 4G Speed?" so that just point that the 9900 will work with 4G but wont have the speed cause carriers cant provide it for now.
Now this thread can be closed :P

I think the point Attila is trying to make is that AT&T and T-Mobile use different 3G bands. And since they're both stating that they have 4G (which would most likely be the same band), if it is an AT&T branded device and you use it on T-Mobile, you will only get EDGE speeds and vice versa.

If we would take this matter serioslly, carriers are most likelly to upgrade their service in near future. That's how it always worked, we pay for the service they don't have so they can acquire it.

The whole 4G thing is irrelevant to me since AT&T isn't expected to have 4G service available in my area for at least another year or so. As much as AT&T sucks, they're about the best option that I've got for my area. Besides, I've been with them for so long that's it's kind of pointless to jump ship now.

I'm completely fine with the 9900 being released as a 3G device. RIM's reasoning for it likely is they can mass produce 3G smartphones for less money and its a more established network so the devices will find their way into more users hands. I'd say when RIM brings Qnx and dual core processors to their product lineup we'll probably see them go 4G then. A dual core, Qnx based 4G Blackberry would be amazing!
