I have a data plan but do not have e-mail or browser capabilities.

Under the signal bars it says GSM in caps. I am assuming that it has to say GPRS or EDGE to have data capabilities. Am I correct in assuming this?

Yes; with GSM all you have is voice and SMS text...

Thanks for the response.

I took the phone to a Cingular store and took the data plan off and put it back on and now everything works. A bit weird but I now have data.

I really really like this phone now
