My boss's boss wants to setup his new BB 7290 to work in his Lexus LS430 which has Bluetooth installed & capable of hands free cellular use.

Does anyone have any information on setting this up? Any experience or advice? Obviously, I don't want to look silly fumbling with the BB in his car.

I have the Lexus owner's manual which actually seems to outline the process pretty well. However it mentions entering in a passcode generated by the car into the BB. I have not seen this before. Will the BB allow this?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the BB comes up and asks for a passkey when it's paring with a device... It's really easy, just go into options on the BB, enable bluetooth, and at the part of the LExus setup where it says to start the pairing on the phone, click the wheel and choose add a device... Then you'll enter the passkey, and you're done..... I would click on the Lexus bluetooth line item on the BB after your done, and choose properties, and then where it says Trusted: NO change that to a YES.

Thanks for the help. Its good to know the instructions work. I couldn't find anything that said it would work for sure, and that makes it harder since you don't know if its the device or you.

I'll "get" to try it in a couple of hours and I'll letcha know how it went.

Well everything seemed to work as described except the transferring of the phonebook.

That didn't work no matter what I tried. He can still call using the BB and the Lexus intercepts and you talk hands free but I can't transfer the phonebook over.

Any ideas?

I don't think you're going to be able to get the phonebook to transfer over to the car no matter what.. I didn't even try to do it with my phone and my car holds it's own internal phonebook that I went through and setup on the car itself. Not too big a deal as I only have a few commonly used numbers when in the car anyways.

Good to hear that it all functioned as expected except the phonebook, but I wouldn't fight that too much as I don't think it's even possible to do that with a BB's bluetooth feature...

The BlackBerry Bluetooth profile only supports voice; no data can be transferred. I wouldn't waste any more time on transferring the phonebook because it can not be done.

You will need to get another phone device (maybe it will work with a notebook with bluetooth) and pair it up and use it to transfer the phone book. I have a Lexus and it was and is a pain. What makes it especially dificult is that the Lexus software does not let you edit or manually add phone numbers. Therefore you must do it via a bluetooth xfer. If there is an error in a number you have to delete the phone book and xfer the whole thing all over again. I have raised this issue with Lexus CS and they claim their is newer software out but they couldn't tell me if it solves any of the issues. (My car is a 2005 model) Seems like no one I could talk to at Lexus really understands technology or bluetooth. The phone software is pretty mediocre, doesn't support voice dialing and the voice recognition software for navigation is terrible. They have a ways to go before they have a decent product in my mind.

It is very easy, paired mine in just a couple.
in the car:
Go to the menu> Phone> Settings> scroll to "add new device", this will give you the pass code.

On the BB:
Go to options> Bluetooth> Add New Device.

When it finds the "hands free" press the track wheel and then enter the passcode given and they should pair.

It is a little bit of a pain because the audio isn't the best going back to the person you are speaking. I think the mic is in the headliner beside the sunroof controls. make sure to tell him to direct voice that way.

I will stop working on the phonebook project unless I can easily find a way to transfer the data to another BT phone.

Any idea why RIM designed the BB7290 this way? Cost savings? Security? It was already a pain we couldn't send data from his PDA directly to the BB. Oh well, not much we can do.

Someone had posted in another forum that RIM has a hefty contract with the US Govt. and that they disable data transfer via BT due to concerns over data security.

It's absolutely because of security. Same reason you won't see a BB with a camera or a BB with an SD card slot. From day one, RIM (even before BT was invented) has been security conscious. Yes, the US government and military are big customers, but many corporations don't like cameras, and don't want data "blue snarfed".
